This week your student(s) has selected a topic for their narrative writing. We have marked entries about their topic in their writer's notebooks and have read back through "mining gems" by highlighting great writing. Writing that sparkles includes specific details that paint a mind picture, action, humor and luscious language/word choice. We will begin prewriting for rough drafts next week.
To go along with our narrative writing which will include a revelation, we have studied the "AHA" signpost where a character has a realization that changes a situation, event or the character him/herself.
We are busily writing in Language Arts! We have finished our exposition paragraph in our fictional narrative and are working on our conflict (body paragraphs). Next week we will finish these up with drafting our resolution paragraph and editing before our final copy is due on Thursday, December 17. I've been so impressed with the creativity the students have shown and how they are connecting their writing to what we learned during Ulysses' journey in our class read. Their final copies are sure to be full of conflict (perils), figurative language and lots of character and setting details!
Students have been exploring beyond just content, and have been digging deep into how they feel. Our learning has extended beyond the study of watersheds and categorizing pollution, and moved into our responsibility to make changes in our lives to help make a difference.

We are wrapping up our unit about the Lithosphere! We will take a test on 12/16 that will cover topographic maps, watersheds, water pollution, and groundwater. We have learned so much about the watersheds around Dublin, and how non point source pollution can get in. We have looked at maps of Dublin to find sources of pollution. We looked at the land types around Dublin and saw how that will affect stormwater runoff. We did a virtual field trip to Indian Run Falls to see where all of the water in our watershed drains to. Did you know the Dublin library has a rain garden to prevent storm water runoff? Pretty cool! Next week we will create flipgrids and discuss how we personally can help our own watershed! There is so much we can all do to ensure clean water for generations!
We are in the home stretch of the semester! We are finishing up with the Roman Empire. The assessment will be next week, either Wednesday or Thursday. We are also working on a social media project in which the students will create a Facebook or Twitter page in the name of their assigned Roman and write posts showing what they have learned in their research. Regardless of what your student may tell you, THEY DO NOT NEED TO CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT. This will be done in a document, not the actual app. If you have questions, please ask your child to show you the document. This is our last project of the semester and I want them to have fun with it!
In our last week of the semester, we will be finishing up our comparisons between the Roman Republic and US Democracy. The students will have the opportunity to determine how democratic the Republic actually was. Students will show what they know in a quick check on Tuesday. The remainder of the week will be open for exploration about life in Rome and also some fun before we head off into break.
We will be finishing up the Solving Systems of Equations.

Students are finishing up art with a photography or free choice assignment. It has been wonderful getting to teach each and every one of you!
We are in our last 2 weeks of art for this semester. Students are busy planning and drawing their ideas for their narrative artwork. Ask your child: “What’s your story”?
This week we wrapped up our study of music theory and learned the notes of piano keyboard. Students had fun collaborating with friends in breakout rooms using Chrome Music Lab shared piano. We will wrap up our quarter next week, with talking about our own musical cultural connections and students will be researching and sharing music of their family's culture.
We've been practicing to make a class recording of some Brazilian music entitled Miudinho this week as well as a special topic with a guest speaker on Thursday and Friday centered around the Tuskegee Airmen and music of WWII. The students asked great questions! Next week we will be recording our chosen instrument parts to create a class recording of Miudinho will finish our last week with a special music quest and open mic. The students have been truly amazing and wonderful this quarter and I have enjoyed working and learning with them so much!
This week we are continuing work on our Tiny Homes! Students are moving past the planning phase and into construction. They will have the opportunity to construct their tiny homes from paper or digitally, using Floorplanner.com. Next week, we will finish up constructing, share what we have made, and discuss the impacts tiny homes could have on the countries where they are located.
