This has been a whirlwind testing week with many of our students back in the building after over a year! It was good to see our students face to face after getting to know them virtually this year! Thanks to students and parents for patience and understanding as we navigating some pretty complicated logistics! Thanks also for being flexible and completing asynchronous work in the afternoons.
We have testing again on Monday (4/12) and Tuesday (4/13). Things should be much smoother now that we've fine-tuned our plans and procedures. Remember that there will be asynchronous work in the afternoon for all students. There will be no synchronous classes on test days. Again, thank you for your flexibility!

This week we spent time preparing for testing making sure everyone knew where to go and what to bring. As one student pointed out it had been over a year since our RLA students have been in person at school. The students did great and what a joy to see them in 3D!!!!!!
This week flew by with only having 3 in class days due to state testing. Leading up to state testing, we prepared by looking at some released test questions and reading a variety of passages to help us get in the testing groove! It acted as great review over what has been learned this year as well as gaining some helpful testing strategies. On Friday, with ELA state testing over, we switched our focus to some creative writing fun and some language review from throughout the year!
Next week, with math state testing happening on Monday/Tuesday, we will have 3 in class days again. Once testing is complete, we will begin our next unit on argumentative writing.
The students have been responding well to our study of populations and communities. Students are familiar with food chains and food webs. In studying about the interdependence of plants and animals in a community, we see how one change can affect everything! We are building on that foundational knowlege by talking about succession events such as volcanoes, wildfires, droughts. When we return from testing, students will be learning how one species like a wolf can actually change the behavior of a river, and exploring the purpose/design of wildlife bridges.
We are beginning our new unit! We will be learning about climates and biomes. This past week we compared different climates and looked for factors that affect climate. We've discussed how latitude has a big effect, but so do several other factors. These different climates help define what type of biome occurs at that location.
It's been a hairy week, returning from break only to have the week interrupted with state testing. We are currently working on our coat of arms, learning what different colors and symbols represented. These will be due next Friday. Next Wednesday, after testing we will look at the Magna Carta as the basis for our own Constitution and the Crusades.
Phew - what a quick and also tiring week as we get back in the swing of things after Spring Break. As you know, state testing was this week which gave us three in class days. During that time, we reviewed what we've learned through this point in the year and began to study the Crusades. The students are asking great questions as we wrap our heads around why Christians would engage in such violence. Next week, as we will again have testing, students will have three in-class days where we will continue to study the Crusades and introduce the Magna Carta and the Black Death.
Monday/Tuesday, Testing. Wed-Fri Pythagorean Theorem.

I am very proud of the effort every student put into class this week! This week we started our Targeting Unit. Students learned how to throw overhand properly and completed activities that helped improve their form and throwing accuracy. Next week, we will continue with this unit and compete against classmates in mini accuracy challenges!
