Seventh graders have finished the Elephant Run book discussions. Students gave the book an average rating of 9 on a 1-10 scale. The consensus was that it started off slowly with lots of Burmese vocabulary. Once readers were acclimated to the cultural background, they loved the action and suspense. With secret passages, explosives, characters overcoming their challenges and fears to outsmart the enemy, Elephant Run was enjoyed by discussion participants.
In class, students have finished their WOW! writing and we are working on comprehension skills when reading tough text..
We are in the beginning stages of our Greek Mythology unit! Students are learning and researching about connections between stores/brands/items from present day and their connection to mythology (Nike, Honda Odyssey, Starbucks, etc.) They are also beginning some research on some of the common gods and goddesses that we will be introduced to in our shared read aloud The Adventures of Ulysses. Many students have a great deal of background knowledge in regards to Greek mythology and all are excited about this new unit! It's sure to be full of learning and fun!
We have wrapped up our Waves Unit, and are moving onto Earth Systems and Heat Transfer. You'll see students learning a lot about the water cycle during the first part of this unit since it takes a familiar topic - the water cycle - and applies the new concepts of earth systems/subsystems and the transfer of heat that puts everything in motion. This new unit provides students with a lot of opportunities to explore through hands-on demos/experiments and online simulations.
We are diving into heat transfer! We will be doing several Gizmo labs to explore heat properties. Once we have a strong foundation in conduction, convection, and radiation we will begin to explore how heat transfer affects our Earth and atmosphere. Along the way, we will make all kinds of connections to meteorology, health, and current events. Heat transfer is happening everywhere!
Our young scholars have been hard at work learning the Greek alphabet and becoming experts on Ancient Greece by researching their respective city states and presenting their findings to their classmates. We are continuing to learn about Greece and will be examining the impact on how their civilization still has on our society today.
Z's historians were true remote learning champs this week. I was out for the first part of the week and students were flexible with technology and the joys of remote learning. They were assessed over their geographical knowledge and can know explain how the physical features of Greece impeded and promoted cultural diffusion in the country. We'll start talking government at the end of this week into next week. The students are collaborating in small "Greece Teams" and it seems to be working really well. I'm grateful to be able to offer learning that resembles group work at school as best we can. Have a great weekend!
We will continue our studies with Equations and word problems with equations.

Warm and cool color leaf designs are due Monday, October 12th. Students will be starting their final art assignment for the 9 weeks involving photography and the alphabet!
We are in our last 2 weeks of art for this semester. Students are busy planning and drawing their ideas for their narrative artwork. Ask your child: “What’s your story”? They all had the opportunity to explore the use of collage in a “mini word collage, art challenge”.
This week we continued our study of music theory. We learned about the notes of the piano and collaborated with friends using chrome music lab shared piano. We also listened to and discussed music from Puerto Rico, Syria, and India. Next week, we will wrap up our quarter by researching folk songs from our own cultures and sharing them with our classmates.
We have worked very hard this week on getting ready to make a virtual music ensemble video for each music class. Each class chose a song and worked to learn instrument or singing parts to contribute. When all the videos are compiled together, we will have a class ensemble! Next week we will focus on in depth study of music traditions and cultures from all over the world.
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.
