This week in ELA we learned and practiced writing critique group feedback skills. Using critique group feedback student revised writing with a focus on staying on topic, having enough information for the topic and adding appropriate descriptive details. Additional challenges of showing and not telling and adding tension were encouraged. Additionally we began our study of informational text by learning about and categorizing various types of nonfiction reading: browsable nonfiction, active nonfiction, traditional nonfiction, expository literature and narrative nonfiction. Consider asking your student(s) to teach you about each of these categories if you are not familiar.
We have continued exploring Greek roots this week and learning more vocabulary as part of our word study focus. Students have now learned the roots bene/bon, mal/male, bell and labor. Knowing the root meaning of many words is really strengthening students overall vocabulary! We have also read more informational text in the book How They Croaked: The Awful Ends to the Awfully Famous. This week, we learned about Julius Caesar. By exploring informational texts, we are laying the ground work for our informational writing. We will begin the actual writing process with some graphic organizers and research next week!
Students started the week in groups using what they've learned about air pressure to figure out the "Mystery Bottle." Ask your child about it! See if they can tell you what's going on! We spent the rest of the week looking at how air temperature changes within different layers of the atmosphere. Today we took a virtual trip in a weather balloon to experience this just a little bit.
We are wrapping up our astronomy unit! We have done about a billion Gizmo labs to develop our understanding of tides, moon phases, and eclipses. We explored live NOAA data to see how lunar phases coincide with tide levels and then drew conclusions from that data. We compared tide levels on east and west coast and noticed that there are different tidal patterns. We will finish our unit out with seasons, looking at how the Earth and Sun's movements affect seasonal temperatures here on Earth. We will take our test on tides, moon phases, eclipses, and seasons late next week. The study guide is already posted so they can start looking over their notes!

In addition to discussing the inauguration of our 46th president, we learned about how Christianity spread through the Roman Empire. We learned more about the enduring impacts of Roman art, architecture, and engineering and how the Romans entertained themselves. Next week, we will demonstrate our knowledge by completing a learning pursuit assessment - this will be open note and take place on Wednesday.
We are working with a compass, protractor, and straightedge to construct line segments, and angles.
