Welcome back! We hope you had a restful winter break, and took a break away from screens. We're looking forward to building upon the successes you had during the first semester.
The related arts classes for RLA will be PE and Health. Some students may have Cog in place of one of those courses. As many of you are aware, there was a delay in the new related arts courses appearing in Schoology. The guidance counselors worked hard on our work day to get the new classes active, but Schoology often lags a day behind the scheduling side of our data. We thank you for your patience!
Here are the Google Meet codes/links for the new related arts classes.

Happy 2021! We start the week by reflecting on 2020 focussing on surprises, successes and things within our control to change. Using that thinking we selected individual guide words for 2021. Ask your student what guide word he/she picked to set his/her intentions for 2021. Additionally we began revising our personal narrative rough drafts. Students participated in a group collaboration activity to help them gauge if their work is under written, over written or "just right writing" connecting to the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
We've ushered in 2021 with some new focuses in ELA! We've begun a word study unit focusing on Greek roots. This week's focus has been on the roots bene/bon and mal. The goal is for students to know the meaning of the root word so that knowledge can be helpful in many words with the same root. We've also begun a group read of a non-fiction text called How They Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous by Georgia Bragg. This informative reading (it chronicles the ends of famous people in history, i.e. King Tut, Cleopatra, Albert Einstein, etc.) will be a helpful text as we eventually get into our next writing focus, a research based piece.
We started our new semester by launching into our study of the ATMOSPHERE. This week, we are intentionally practicing the skills of textbook reading and a variety of note-taking techniques (Cornell Notes and Sketchnoting) as we gather our foundational information on the atmosphere. This is difficult work and can be tedious, but the students are working hard!
Slight change of plans from last time I updated. We will be doing our Astronomy unit, before moving on to the atmosphere! Students will learn about the phases of the moon, eclipses, tides, and seasons. Students began the unit by using a Moon Phases Gizmo lab to get some more hands on practice with moon phases.

It's so wonderful to have all the students back and to be moving and grooving with our routines. This week, we reviewed the Roman Republic and then spent time discussing current events. I can't get over how mature and respectful your children are. Blown away by their contributions to our discussions. Next week, we will cover the expansion of Rome and also the enduring influences that Rome has had on modern society. Looking forward to continuing our learning together!
We will continue to learn about circles, π, and start in with angles. We welcome our new students to Remote Learning and wish our students well that transitioned into Hybrid.
