Time flies when you're having fun! It is hard to believe only have 5 weeks left of school. Your kids may be counting the days until the freedom of summer vacation, but the teachers are looking at the time and wondering how to fit everything in! We are thrilled that your kids are still working hard because we have a lot left to learn this year.

This week we spent time revising our thesis sentences and finishing up our introductory paragraphs for our persuasion/argument advocacy speeches. Next week we will focus on writing supporting paragraphs.
We are in the beginning stages of our argument writing unit. Thus far, we have learned about the organization and key terms (i.e.claim, evidence, thesis and hook) needed in argument writing. We have explored the topic of "Should we eat insects?" by watching a video and reading an article on the topic in order to determine the pros/cons. Students then began a practice writing on this topic, taking their stance and using text evidence to support their claim. Additionally, students have also chosen their final argument topic which we will continue working on next week. We have also continued with our Greek roots unit, learning a new root (path/pati/pass which means suffering or feeling).
Students wrapped up their study of Populations and Communities this week with a quiz. Next week, we will begin a 3-week study of Chemistry and Matter.
If you can get together some "kitchen chemistry" objects at home, I'd appreciate it. We have a hands-on (and screen-free) activity that involves a ziplock baggy, a Kleenex, baking soda, and vinegar. This simple activity will help kids experience the concepts of: chemical change, endothermic reaction, chemical compounds/formulas, and the Law of Conservation of Matter.
If you have a small blender, and can pick up a head of cabbage, there's another activity they could do as well! They can create an "indicator" and test different acids and bases around the house.
Thanks in advance for getting these items together!
We are continuing our study of biomes! We will look at different populations and communities, seeing what limiting factors are involved. We will continue with our Biome Mix-Up project and see how making changes to the biomes can affect the plants and animals that live there. We learned about what invasive species are found here in Ohio and students tried to see if there were any in their own yards.
This week we have been discussing the Crusades, how they began as religious wars but for many became the opportunity to loot and how they have led to 1000 years of religious war over territory in the Holy Land. We will have our quiz over the Middle Ages on Tuesday and then begin looking into the Renaissance and Reformation. We're in the home stretch!
We're plowing through the Crusades and the decline of feudalism. Next Wednesday, we will have a quiz over the material. After that, we get to the excitement of the Renaissance and Reformation!
Assessment for Pythagorean Theorem. Next - Volume of Curved figures.
