MAP Testing - January 14 & 15
Winter MAP testing took place this week on January 14th and 15th for those students in the Remote Learning Academy. The MAP is used to help us monitor our students' progress throughout the year. Students' schedules were adjusted on Thursday and Friday in order to provide a single block with which to test. Students missed half of their regular classes on Thursday (afternoon), and half of their regular classes on Friday (morning).
MATH MAP - Thursday, 1/14 from 12:30-3:30 (Periods 5-7)
READING MAP - Friday, 1/15 from 8:00-11:00 (Periods 1-4). There will be no Health, PE, or Cog for our 7th graders that day
Asynchronous Day - January 26
On Tuesday, January 26 ALL Dublin middle school students will be working asynchronously. There will be no scheduled class time that day since teachers will be utilized to proctor our 8th grade PSAT testing in the building. On that day, RLA students will need to go to Schoology and complete assignments for each course independently. Thank you for your understanding!
In class students have continued to work on improving their revision skills when writing. The classes defined Just Right Writing as being on topic and having adequate information with enough details to allow readers to envision a mind movie. Students worked in writing critique groups and began applying what they learned about Just Right Writing independently. Showing instead of telling, using voice and/or creating tension were given as challenge options.
We have used this week to start looking at a variety of texts to read for understanding and compare/contrast across texts. We read/watched multiple sources focusing on King Tut. We also explored infographics and selected a vocabulary word from this week's reading to focus on for our infographic. Students final copies turned out really nice--they are full of info and images. Another focus this week was word study based: we learned about the roots bene/bon and mal/male. We will have a quiz on Tuesday, 1/19 over these roots and the relating vocabulary words.
This week, we are observing the power of air pressure! Students watched lab demonstrations all week to help them make connections between the new concepts we talked about last week and those concepts in action. In breakout rooms, they talked about what they observed, and what part air pressure and air density had to play. This will help us to more deeply understand movement and layering of air in our atmosphere.
We have learned all of the moon phases and practiced moving the moon and sun in our Gizmo to see what causes these different phases. We also learned about lunar and solar eclipses! We practiced making our own eclipses in a Gizmo, looking at the umbra and penumbra. Next week we will dive on in to tides! We will learn that even though we are back in the hydrosphere, it is really astronomy doing the work here! We will learn how the positions of the sun, moon, and earth cause high, low, spring, and neap tides. After that we will learn what causes seasons.
We are finishing up our study of the Roman Empire and are learning about the birth of Christianity and the role it played in the Roman Empire. This will be a comparatively short unit of study before we move on to the birth of Islam and the African nations.
This week, we discovered how Roman expanded from a tiny republic to a massive empire. We introduced the birth of Christianity and how Roman aqueducts and the network of roads was incredibly influential throughout the remainder of history. Next week, we'll dig into the enduring impacts of Rome. On Tuesday of next week, we'll honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by listening to and analyzing his last speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop."
We will test our knowledge of circles next week and move into triangles and other angles.
