We continued learning about creative nonfiction this week and began working with a story arc graphic organizer to improve writing quality. Students are now allowed and encouraged to write fictional and narrative nonfiction entries in their Writer's Notebooks for daily writing goal homework.
We are continuing in our unit on informative texts with both reading and writing. We have read many articles about various people in history and have identified key components like challenges/obstacles, resilience, innovativeness and other big ideas. By reading about these figures, students have been practicing identifying these big ideas in reading so that they can apply that to their own person of interest in our informative writing unit. Students have all chosen their person of interest in our writing unit and have started collecting reliable sources about this person. Next up is lifting text evidence to support these big ideas!
Additionally, we have been learning many root words over the last few weeks. Our next Greek roots quiz (over the roots, their meaning and the vocabulary words) will be on Friday, Feb. 5 and cover the roots bell, labor, lud/lus, matri/matern, and patri/patern.
Students have been learning about the atmosphere through lab demonstrations, reading, group discussions, and videos. They finished the week by becoming ATMOS Special Agents and solving puzzles in a Mission Impossible Escape Room. The kids had fun, and I was impressed with their persistence and perseverance! Next week, we will be using The Lorax as our inspiration to learn about Air Pollution, both natural sources and those resulting from human actions (or inactions). Students will be working together to make connections with Air Quality Index (AQI) and the human impact. The final project is a creative response. Look for these in the very near future!
We are wrapping up our study of astronomy! We learned about moon phases, tides, why seasons occur, and eclipses. Students have done many online labs to explore these tricky concepts. We will come back down closer to earth to begin our new unit on the atmosphere! This will include the layers of the atmosphere and aspects of air pollution.
We are currently exploring the Arabian Peninsula and the birth of Islam. We are looking at how bedouins survive in the desert even today. If we can coordinate schedules, we will be having a guest speaker who has spent some time in the region.
We are rounding out our study of Ancient Rome - this week, we demonstrated our understanding of the Roman learning pursuits and began exploring why the Roman Empire fell. Next week, we'll continue to solidify our understanding of why Rome fell and move on into the Middle East.
We are continuing to work with triangles and angles. We'll construct triangles with given sides and angles.
