As a segue between our focus on theme and meaning and our next creative writing narrative project, this week we focussed on creativity. Students created a list of blocks to creativity: negative self talk, what others think, needing a good idea, pressure for doing well when mistake making is how we get better, not having the right materials and too many guidelines/restrictions,. Students were given the open ended task of communicating a self selected theme uniquely. Some students worked in groups while others chose to work independently. Please, enjoy a few examples of the themes and creativity thinking. Creativity with Themes
Throughout the past week, we took an assessment over our reading in The Adventures of Ulysses and then moved on to a focus on figurative language. This emphasis on figurative language will be especially helpful when we resume our fictional narrative writing piece after Thanksgiving break. We are going to incorporate figurative language into our writing in a creative way to give it a boost! Prior to Thanksgiving break, we will get back into Ulysses and see where his journey (along with certain challenges) takes him next!
This unit began with an exploration of reading contour lines on topographic maps. This past week we built upon those skills and added to it. We've been learning about ground water, aquifers, and watersheds, and pollution. Have your child practice using the maps and tools they've been learning to show you some of the watershed areas in Dublin!
We have been learning all about topographic maps! We learned about contour lines and intervals through a Gizmo lab and exploring USGS topographic maps. We learned that these types of maps are especially important to scientists because they focus on natural features. Now we will begin our study of groundwater and pollution.
This week we discussed the Roman Republic and the Punic Wars. Be sure to ask your students about what 'monsters' Hannibal led across the Alps. We will be having a short assessment on Monday and Tuesday we will take a look at the history of Thanksgiving and what is true and what is myth. Have a great weekend, Go Bucks!
This week, we dove into Rome and learned about the myth of how it was founded. The kids loved learning about Romulus and Remus. We also started navigating the geographic and physical features that helped Rome grow and also made cultural diffusion a challenge for them. Next week, we will investigate the history of Thanksgiving as true historians - looking at the various perspectives, the motives involved, and how much of the history is still present in modern traditions.
We will continue to work with Linear Equations and Systems of Equations.

Students have been working hard on their Pointillism projects that are due next Monday, November, 23rd. Next week we will explore one-point perspective and learn to draw our dream bedroom.
Students are designers and creative thinkers as they plan out their functional 3D artwork. They are coming up with ways to repurpose, reuse and recycle things all around them.
In this unit students have been challenged to work with recycled and natural materials to create a functional artwork. Ask your student about the Samsung “Out of the Box 2020” competition.
We had another fun week of drumming! This week, we learned the song Take Time In Life from Liberia and the students were able to use the breakout rooms to play the different parts together! It was nice to hear them interact and actually get to make music together even if they were in their own houses. We also learned about a Puerto Rican style of music called Plena and did some improvising.
We will use our short week next week to learn about Blues and they will be writing their own 12 Bar Blues song lyrics.
We continued our study of how music connects us this week by writing radio plays using music from different cultures. The students did a wonderful job of writing a story and including music and sound effects to help tell their story. Next week we will focus on music from the 1940s and have a special guest!
This past week in Cog Ed we created interactive games about our FanSchool countries and learned so much new information! We also "traveled" to different countries around the world via virtual reality tours and discussed what we noticed and wondered about these neat places. Next week, we'll be actually playing the games that we created about our countries and doing some fun word puzzles.
