This week we discussed the concept of theme, began looking at how memory moments affect author's message and meaning and focussed on creativity as a vehicle for sharing messages.
We are continuing to read in The Adventures of Ulysses--exploring vocabulary, themes and many literary terms along the way! We will soon begin incorporating figurative language (similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, idioms, oxymorons, hyperboles and onomatopoeias) into our lessons and how these are evident in our reading.
On 11/17, we will have a quiz over our reading from the chapters Keeper of the Winds through The Sirens (pages 30-87).
Maps, maps, and more maps! We just began our study of the Lithosphere. We'll utilize contour maps from the US Geological Survey, Ohio relief maps, and Google Earth to practice new skills. This week we looked at how we can use contour lines on a 2D map to represent features on the earth. The most exciting thing about this unit of study is that we can apply these concepts to our own back yard!
We are wrapping up our study of the Hydrosphere and taking our test, it got pushed back to Monday 11/16. Students have been exploring the water cycle through Google Maps and going on a virtual field trip to South America. On the virtual field trip they can see the water cycle in action! We have also taken some time to discuss our own water usage and how agriculture and industry affect the fresh water supply. We have learned that the water cycle is an amazing process that cleans and transfers water all around. Maybe the water you are drinking was once inside a dinosaur, maybe it was also drank by Martin Luther King Jr! Who knows where this water has been on its journey through the water cycle! Next week, we will begin our study of the lithosphere in more detail. Topics will include topographic maps, groundwater, and water pollution.
We have begun studying the early origins of Rome including Romulus and Remus and the seven kings. We have discussed how legends may fill the gap when history is not known as well as the idea that origin stories and legends are very similar across civilizations. On Wednesday we paused to discuss Veterans Day and to learn more about those who have sacrificed for ourselves and our country. We will have a short quiz on Friday before digging in to the Roman Republic beginning on Monday.
Students are working hard as they finalize their creations for the Enduring Impacts of Greece project - they've been tasked with imagining and modern creation inspired by ancient Greek culture. From fashion to architecture and military/war to the olympics, the students seem to be having a ball! Next week, we will present our projects in small groups and then it's onto Rome! We'll start with geography and how the physical features of Rome impacted Roman life.
We are continuing our work in Linear Equations and have moved back into the 8th grade curriculum to explore Constant of Proportionality, Unit Rate, Slope, Slope Intercept. Quiz on 11/20.

Students did an excellent job on their color theory fall leaf artworks. This week we have been continuing our study of color and looking at the artist Georges Seurat and his infamous art style of Pointillism. Students will be creating their own dot artworks using the color knowledge they have become such experts on!
Students have been introduced to a variety of “mixed media” sculpture artists. These artists create art from repurposed and natural materials. Ask your child about the different materials the artists use in their artwork. The next unit in art will be focused on Mixed Media and Sculpture. Students will be using repurposed and natural materials to create their functional work of art. Keep collecting materials.
This week, we continued our rhythm and percussion unit and learned about the music of Brazil. We learned to play the Afoxé which is a style of percussion played by during Carnaval!
Next week, we will continue drumming and learning drumming ensembles from Japan and Liberia
We've had a great week learning to play Afoxé, a Brazilian percussion ensemble and students spent the week planning a virtual trip to Brazil to help us understand the culture and context of the music we're studying. They have also been researching folk songs from their cultural heritage to share. Next week we will continue our study of cultural heritage and how music connects people and builds community.
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.

This week we began our geopolitics game on FanSchool! Students have been getting to know the countries that are on their teams through investigations on Google Trends and the New York Times. The competition is definitely starting to heat up, with students earning points every day and bartering for different countries! Ask your student what their current standing is!
