End of the Quarter
Today marked the end of the first quarter! Take a well-deserved break, catch your breath, and we will see students back in virtual class on Wednesday, October 21. Teachers will be attending professional development sessions and finalizing grades while students are out.
New Related Arts Rotation WEDNESDAY, October 21.
With the start of the 2nd quarter, all students who were currently in ART will move to GENERAL MUSIC, and those students who were in GENERAL MUSIC will move to ART.
You Deserve a Break!
Students will not have school on Monday (10/19) or Tuesday (10/20) next week. Teachers have a conference comp day on Monday, and a Professional Development/Work day on Tuesday. Take this opportunity to take time away from screens, go outside, and enjoy the beautiful fall colors!

RLA 7 Friday Funday Coming Soon!
Since students in the RLA travel in cohorts during their school day, we are looking for ways to give them an opportunity to expand their circle and make connections with kids outside of their class groups. Teachers are busy working on Grizzell/Karrer Remote Learning Academy 7 FRIDAY FUNDAY Interest Groups. Students were asked what interests they have, and in what areas they have some expertise. Teachers will create interests groups from the student input, build the framework for the groups, then give students an opportunity to sign up. Teachers will facilitate these clubs that will meet regularly during the Flexible Learning time (2:00-3:00). Virtual interest groups are optional, but we hope that many will choose to participate.
Friday we will finish the last of the three book discussion groups for I Will Always Write Back! Student ratings to follow next week.
In class we have been studying story arcs as a way to enhance reading comprehension. We will also be using story arc templates when we begin writing fictional stories.
We've completed some beginning of unit work which included some Greek Connections work and some OMG & G cards to learn about the gods/goddesses of Greek mythology. With this as background knowledge, we were able to get to work! We've begun reading The Adventures of Ulysses and have learned various reading strategies like annotating using the 4 square to guide us and SWBST, which is used to summarize. Please ask your kids how they've annotated their books so far and to describe the SWBST process in regards to The Trojan Horse Trick. We finished the week with completing a flow chart to enhance our comprehension of our reading and a short hand written free write in which students choose which god/goddess they would like to be and why. This unit is off to a great start and the students are loving the content!
We wrapped up our first quarter of work this week, and I couldn't be more pleased with the students' efforts. With the addition of Google Meet Breakout Rooms, students have the ability to break into small groups where they can talk to each other, share their screens, and collaborate. This proved to be a valuable tool this week as students watched some lab demonstrations as a whole group, then broke into small groups to reflect on their observations. Having opportunities to talk with one another will surely enhance our classroom community!
We are starting a new unit this week! We just took a quiz on the types of heat transfer last week, but the grade will go into second quarter so we have time for corrections. Heat transfer is not going away though! Our next unit will focus on earth systems and "spheres" and how heat transfer and the water cycle affect these. We will be learning about the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and the lithosphere.
We had a strong finish to the first quarter. We began with a discussion of what if means to be a citizen and that fact that certain societies value the state over the individual. We learned that otherwise competitive city states came together against a common opponent (the enemy of my enemy is my friend) in the Persian Wars and saw that overmatched armies fighting for their freedom can overcome long odds (particularly if they can protect their flanks!) We finished this week with a mythology web quest. Next week we will discuss the Golden Age of Athens and the Peloponnesian War between the city states and its consequences. Have a relaxing long weekend! Aloha
Our young historians have been learning collaboratively about Athenian democracy. We had a blast on Friday playing "Who's That Baby?" where student's baby pictures were featured and everyone had to guess who it was. It was nice to have a break from the daily grind and just play!
Next week is a short week and we will wrap up our study of government and spend some time on Friday discussing current events. Have a great long weekend!
We will continue our studies with Equations and word problems with equations. 2nd Quarter begins 10/21.

The new 9 weeks begins 10/21 and a new group of students will be starting art class! I look forward to exploring new artists, techniques and materials with the students this 9 weeks!
This is our last week in art. All assignments are due this Thursday 10/15. I have enjoyed teaching and creating with all the students. The students have shared so many creative ideas throughout the semester. Have a wonderful rest of the school year.
I can't believe this is the end of the quarter and the end of our music class! All assignments should be turned in tomorrow so I can finish grades. I have really enjoyed working with this great group of students. We wrapped up our quarter talking about our own personal family cultures and music that is a part of those cultures. Have a wonderful rest of the school year!
We wrapped up this week with some exploratory listening to music from many different cultures. We went on a choose your own adventure quest while we discovered these new musics that the students really enjoyed! The students have been truly wonderful in music these past nine weeks and I am sorry to see them leave general music. Please stay tuned for information about a virtual music club for students who would like to continue doing music activities. Also, please have students check and see if they are missing any assignments. I look forward to the new general music students starting next week!
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.
