Spring MAP Testing
Students completed the final session of MAP for the year! Our RLA schedule was adjusted so that students missed their afternoon classes (Periods 5-7) on Thursday, May 6 for the Math MAP, and missed their morning classes (Periods 1-4) on Friday, May 7 for the Reading MAP. Over the course of the two days, they saw all of their classes once.
Wrapping up the Year
We have four more weeks of school left. Time flies when you're having fun, and this year certainly has flown by! This group of kids have made learning fun for everyone.
We are working on some plans to finish the year with some fun, team-building experiences. Stay tuned for more information!

We are in the bulk of our argumentative writing unit; we are currently writing our body paragraphs and early next week we will move into our conclusions. The body paragraphs include a claim, thesis, counterclaim, various sentence structures, coordinate adjectives and more upper-level requirements...be sure to ask your student about this structured argumentative writing! This last writing unit of the year will conclude May 13 so that our last few weeks of school can be focused on some less formal writing along with some reading and word fun!
We are in the middle of our chemistry unit, and students are working very hard! These concepts are pretty abstract, so students are really having to focus... even when the days get warmer! I'm proud of their efforts this late in the school year. This week, students are designing their own Element Superhero or Supervillain. In doing so, they'll have a creative way to focus on the properties of one family on the Periodic Table. Students will share their creations with classmates. For some, drawing is outside their comfort zone, but all seemed to be excited for an opportunity to be creative and screen-free!
We have wrapped up our study of the biosphere, now we will begin a short unit on chemistry and electricity. Students will explore the periodic table of the elements, as well as chemistry basics like mixtures, compounds, acids, and bases. We will use online labs to practice these skills "hands on" as much as possible. Then we will do a brief study of circuits and how they work, using an online circuit tool.
We are finishing up our unit on the Renaissance and the Reformation. We have begun our final project, the students are becoming newspaper reporters, choosing an event from either the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration, or The Scientific Revolution, and writing an article about it. Finishing strong!
We have begun studying the Renaissance (or the RenaiZZance for my kids :)) and the students are working on a mini project where they will engage in the thinking, innovation, and creation that was characteristic of the Renaissance. Ask them about it, it's so fun! Students will share their Renaissance contributions on Wednesday of next week and then we will dive head first into Renaissance art, conducting a studying comparing art from eras leading up to this time period.
Continue our studies of Probability and Stats.
