RLA 7 Friday Funday Begins OCTOBER 30!
Since students in the RLA travel in cohorts during their school day, we are looking for ways to give them an opportunity to expand their circle and make connections with kids outside of their class groups. Teachers are busy working on Grizzell/Karrer Remote Learning Academy 7 FRIDAY FUNDAY Interest Groups. Students have submitted ideas, and teachers are working to organize ideas and build the framework for the groups. These groups will meet regularly during the Flexible Learning time (2:00-3:00). Virtual interest groups are optional, but we hope that many will choose to participate.
Check out our Friday FUNday page to learn more.
We continue to learn about Story Arcs as writing blueprints and a way to improve comprehension. On Monday students will have a quiz on Story Arcs. Next week we will be working in writing workshop.
Our last series of book discussions is complete. I Will Always Write Back got mixed reviews ranging from ratings of 4 to 10 on a 10 point scale. The average rating was a 6.5. Students either loved or disliked it. Ten of the 31 participating students gave the book a 10 out of 10. Some did not like I Will Always Write Back because they said they are not fond of the memoir genre. Participants felt they would be better able to connect with the book if the authors had included more about the characters' middle school lives in general.
During the last few days of our shortened week, students have continued exploring The Adventures of Ulysses, responding to their reading, discussing vocabulary, annotating and comprehending the text. We also began our first step of our narrative writing piece, centered around the idea of our journey/odyssey home. We will continue work on this over the next few weeks!
Next week, we will continue with our reading--annotating in the text, vocabulary building and reading responses. We will also take a quiz over our reading through The Cyclops Cave chapter and do some more work on our narrative writing.
Students spent this short week constructing some initial understanding around the concepts of heat transfer - conduction, convection, and radiation. Next week they will apply these concepts to their "Save Pingu the Penguin Igloo Design Contest!" Students will need access to a square or rectangular plastic box (about the size of single-serve applesauce container, but square) and a ruler. If you can help your child find these items before Monday, that'd be a big help!
We spent our week studying Earth's spheres. Next week, we will deep dive into the hydrosphere and see how the water cycle, heat transfer, and our spheres are all part of an interconnected system of the Earth! We will use interactive Gizmos and games to study these topics further. On Friday, we will focus on a current event and discuss how Earth's fresh water supply is limited and how important it is to conserve water.
It seems like this week just flew by! This week we discussed different types of government and how citizens participate in each. Next week we will have a quiz on Greece and the Persian Wars. I will be posting notes and slide shows that they can use to prepare.
Short week! The young historians and I solidified understanding of the rise of democracy in Greece. Next week, there will be an assessment over Greece Geography and Government on Wednesday - we will review in class on Monday and Tuesday. Next up, a student-selected project about the enduring influence of Ancient Greek culture.
We are starting the new quarter and continuing to work with Equations and will be graphing on number lines this week.

Hi! It was great connecting with everyone this week as we began out first project of a self-portrait and discussed taking photos of our artwork in various lighting scenarios. We will have Google meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from here on out. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
Hello everyone! We had a great first few days in art getting to know each other and talking about empathy. Remember to log into Schoology Monday and read through the slide deck about "Reconnecting with Nature" so you are prepared for our Google meet on Tuesday. We will have Google meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from here on out. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
Hello! It has been great to get to know the new group of kids this week! This week, we focused on getting to know each other. We learned a body percussion routine called Seven and talked about what song we would consider our 2020 theme song. Next week, we will talk about how musicians can use music as a way to inspire people and talk about songs that raise awareness for issues the students are passionate about. This is going to be a great quarter!
It has been very enjoyable getting to know new students as we start the second quarter. This week centered around getting to know you activities. Next week our topic will be music that inspires. Students will choose an issue that they are passionate about and explore music to support awareness and knowledge about that issue.
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.
