It was fantastic to see so many students at the RLA Soirée this week! There was lots of laughter, play, excited chatter, and pictures. I suspect there were even smiles behind those masks!
We did not distribute Certificates (Esquire, Principal's, etc.) at the gathering this week. We thought about doing that, but the logistics made it pretty difficult. And we wanted to ensure that the certificates remained in pristine condition - Many students rode their bikes, skateboards, walked... The 7th Grade Certificates are available at your school for pick-up now through the first week of June. If you don't end up picking them up this year, we'll find you in the fall! The kids worked very hard this year, so those Certificates mean a lot!

Students used a rubric to revise and edit their advocacy speeches. They joined critique groups for input. Essays are due to be turned in and read in class on Monday, May 24. I'm excited for the students to share their problem solving toward impacting issues about which they care!
We've been busily reading, listening to and discussing our last read aloud of the year, Ground Zero by Alan Gratz. We've had some powerful conversations around the two main characters, Brandon and Reshmina. We will continue doing some writing and reading with this book next week!
I also shared with students about summer reading choices. They are required to read a minimum of two books: one is a book of their choice and the other is one from the suggested titles (When, The Night Diary, The Running Dream or Why.) The document that I shared with them and is available on Schoology is posted here.
Students have been playing with electricity this week... Literally! Luckily the electrical components have been through Gizmos and PhET Simulations, so the only fires and short circuits have been virtual. They have discovered quite a bit through targeted challenges within their lab groups. Students spent this week focusing on the parts of a circuit, and the differences between serial circuits and parallel circuits. We'll end the year with a Home Energy Audit next week.
We are wrapping up the year for 7th grade science! We are exploring electrical circuits and seeing how they work. We will learn about static electricity also. We will spend next week exploring circuits through an online interactive tool.
We are wrapping up the year with the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution. We are discussing who people are looking at the world differently and thinking about the natural rights all men (and women) are born with and the balance that government must keep. This will be the forundation for US History next year.
And then there was one.... week left of school! Next week, we will engage with a mock CSI investigation about the Medici family. Some fun to end the year on!
We have completed Probability and should focus on completing Mathia and doing some other fun with Math.
