Today was the end of the 3rd quarter. New related arts classes begin Monday, March 8.
This weeks overarching theme was advocacy as it relates to sharing information persuasively with a focus on audience, context and delivery. We listened to, read and studied work from Amanda Gorman, Greta Thunberg and Fred Rogers.
We are continuing in our informative unit--this week's main focus was determining central idea in various texts. This preparation will get us ready for writing our introduction and our own central idea about our person of interest next week! Our focus will shift to mostly to informative writing beginning next week as well. We quizzed over our most recent 5 roots on Friday, 3/5 and will continue learning new Greek roots in the coming weeks. Our fourth quarter is on the horizon and students are continuing to learn a lot!
WOW, these kids finished strong in this quarter! Students have been working together on Gizmos simluations to understand how the earth's tilt and position in relation to the sun affect the seasons. This comes at a good time as we are watching the days get longer and warmer! Happy meteorological spring! We'll build on our understanding next week as we begin our study of climate zones and biomes.
We are working on wind and ocean currents! We discussed how different careers need an understanding of wind currents in order to be successful We are making connections between our study of heat transfer and how that creates convection currents in our atmosphere. We have discussed how these convection currents are the driving force behind our winds, both locally and globally. Next week we will look at global wind patterns and discuss the historical context for their naming.
We finished our study of the African kingdoms and had our assessment on Tuesday. It was more challenging and required a higher level of thinking than previous quizzes but overall, they did very well. We have now worked our way back to Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire to examine what it looks like when systems break down and society has to start over. We have had some interesting discussions on how we might live if things we take for granted suddenly disappeared, using the recent incident in Texas as an example.
This week, we wrapped up the Middle Ages and next week we will move onto Islam - I'm anxious to learn with and from the kids! The kids had fun creating Middle Ages characters this week and working with each other to respond to a learning pursuit in essay/story form. This was new for them and great practice for High School and college.
Verifying Congruence through Translations to begin the quarter.

Last week we finished our unit on cricket, the second most popular sport in the world! This week we are finishing the end of our quarter with a dance party! So far, we have learned African, Irish, Greek, and Hula dancing. We will finish the week with country western line dancing and some party dances like the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, and the Wobble. The students did a fantastic job on their yoga video assignment, hopefully they will remember the poses when they need to reduce stress and relax in the future. I will miss these kids so much, I hope they had as much fun as I did! Go Celts!
We just finished up Body Systems and are wrapping up Health for the 3 quarter. Next week, we will start our Mental Health Unit.
This is the last week of the quarter. We are finishing up our ATMOD (Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana and Other Drugs) Unit. Next week, we get our new Health kids and will begin with our Social, Emotional, Mental Health Unit. I will miss the kids I've had this quarter, but I'm looking forward to meeting the new Health kids.
