Thank you for your flexibility this week as students in Remote Learning Academy enjoyed a calamity day this past Tuesday. It was a nice surprise to have a screen-free day! Hopefully students took advantage of this opportunity for some rest and renewal.
We finished and shared our collaborative, story arc prewriting this week and we have begun a study of news literacy. We are working on decoding text and subtext to uncover types of persuasion be used and possible implications.
We have continued to explore informational reading and practicing pulling text evidence from that reading. Students have also practiced supporting the text evidence with reasons surrounding it. We recently quizzed over 5 Greek roots (lud/lus, matri/matern, patri/patern, bell and labor). By knowing the meaning of the root, students will learn the meaning of many words!
Students have been learning about Air Pollution... specifically the human impact. We have had some tough conversations, but never fear! The students have been thinking about solutions to those problems. What small things can each of us do that can make a difference? Students spent this week reviewing conduction, convection, and radiation by seeing these concepts in action. We made use of simulations and lab demonstrations as we had small group discussions. It's always helpful to attach concepts to experiences. Try this together as a family, and see if your child can explain what's happening!
What's going on up there? We are exploring earth's atmosphere! We are learning what our atmosphere is made of, how the weight of it affects our bodies, and what happens in the different layers. We discussed what would happen if we had no atmosphere (not a super fun time!) and what our atmosphere does to protect us and sustain life on earth. We are going on a digital field trip up Mount Everest and looking at how the air pressure changes and oxygen levels affect humans.
We are finishing up our study of the Arabian peninsula and the birth of Islam. We have seen that the area has a variety of different environments and what people do to adapt to living with those differences as well as the contributions that Arabs made to the world (much to the dismay of those who question the value of algebra). We are also discovering that Islam, Christianity, and Judaism have far more in common than they differ. We will have our assessment next week and then begin our study of the African kingdoms.
This week we wrapped up Rome by discovering what contributed to its fall and eventual demise. We used the lens of history to analyze contemporary times. After all, that's why we study history! So we don't repeat its mistakes. Next week, we'll dive into the Dark Ages and begin our study of the Medieval world and beyond.
We finished our Constructions like Euclid and are moving on to 3D figures this week.
