This week we learned about and practiced writing transitions between paragraphs and concluding paragraphs. Students will be completing the rough drafts of their advocacy speeches. Next week we will revise, edit and share.
We are wrapping up our argument writing unit and will be finished with "formal" writing assignments for the year. Students are happy to move on to more fun, creative writing throughout the coming weeks. Students also voted on our last read aloud for the year--the winner was Ground Zero by Alan Gratz. This book won in a landslide and we will read as much as we can before school lets out! We will complete some reading informal activities while reading this book. Next week I will introduce the summer reading choices as they move into 8th grade. I will post that PDF to the team site then!
Our Chemistry Unit culminated this week with a fun challenge. Students worked hard to BREAK OUT OF THE CHEMISTRY LAB AND SAVE THE WORLD! This team-based escape room challenged kids to apply their learning to solve clues and stop the mad scientist... Or was it a mad scientist after all? We will shift gears next week into our final unit of study – Electricity. ⚡️
We are working on our chemistry unit. We have discussed elements, compounds, and mixtures. This week we will dive into the details of the periodic table and better get to know the elements there. Next week, we will learn about acids and bases. From there we will finish out the year with a brief unit on Electricity!
This week we examined the age of Exploration and Discovery and pondered how it is possible to 'discover' land that is already inhabited. We discussed whether exploration is good or bad and came to the conclusion, as is the case with almost everything having to do with people, that there is no completely good or bad but it depends on one's perspective. Next week we will look at The Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment which will set the philosophical foundations for the United States and 8th grade history.
Students had fun this week, creating a virtual Renaissance contribution - they answers fun and serious philosophical questions, invented something to make their lives easier or more fun, and flexed their drawing muscles by sketching something they observe around them. Ask them to see their Flipgrid posts if you're interested! Next week, we will finish our art history exploration and learn more about the people who shaped the Renaissance.
We will continue to learn more about probability and stats.
