Scheduling Parent Meeting
Stay tuned for a Scheduling Google Meet for parents on Tuesday, March 9. This will help you understand options and process for 8th grade scheduling.
Friday Fundays are BACK!
Here's what we shared with students...
Interested in getting together with friends, and making new friends? Your teachers will host Google Meets every Friday from 2:00-2:30. You can do something fun as a whole group, or go into breakout rooms to just chat. Consider this an opportunity to just hang out with other kids!
Sign up for a Friday Funday Group. Put your name in one of the blocks to sign up. If several kids want to be together, take a look at the names and add yours to the same teacher’s group. You may only sign yourself up. Please don’t add other kids’ names or delete/move other kids. Thanks!
This week we shifted gears and have been working with revising and editing. Following the process that published authors use, students used rubrics to self evaluate pieces of writing and set writing goals to improve their work. Students met with a critique partner and practiced reading their work aloud to identify glitches. Ask your student about the effectiveness of reading work out loud when editing. Final drafts are due on Sunday to give students, who need additional time to do their best work. With the goal of owning their own learning, I am impressed with the insightful and specific input students gave each other in critique groups. Impressive!
We have been busy reading informational articles from sites like Newsela and honing our comprehension skills with some questions to check for understanding. Additionally, we have explored some more Greek roots--this week's focus was audi/audit (hear; listen) and loqu/locut (speak; talk). Our vocabulary is growing and our knowledge of a word's roots is, too! Also, we have continued with our focus on a Person of Interest (informational writing) with the introduction of a new activity called Graffiti Wall Art--ask your child about this fun assignment for more details!
Next week, we plan on continuing with our informational reading and writing focus. Our next root quiz covering our last 5 roots will likely be the week of March 8.
We wrapped up our study of the ATMOSPHERE with an open-notes test on Tuesday, February 23. This unit of study explored layers of the atmosphere, air pressure, heat transfer, air pollution, and wind. We spent the rest of the week on enrichment activities such as a virtual climb to the top of Mount Everest, and a dangerous raft trip escaping from Alcatraz. Beginning next week, we'll start to look at Climate, Climate Change, Biomes, Animal Populations & Communities. This is going to be fun!
We are finishing up our study of the atmosphere. We have learned about the composition and importance of the atmosphere. We have also learned how humans can change/alter the atmosphere through exploring air pollution. Our test will be March 2nd and will cover topics of atmosphere and air pollution. Next up: ocean currents and wind currents!
We have been looking at the kingdoms of West Africa and discussing the difference in our perception of Africa today and the reality of ancient Africa and what may be the cause of the difference. We have also examined the folklore and creation stories and seen the similarities across civilizations, from Romulus and Remus in Rome, to Sundiata, the Lion King in Mali, to the birthday boy, George Washington.
This week, we are learning about the feudal system and manor life - it has been so interesting to see a very different government structure and the kids are getting a kick out of life during the middle ages. Next week, we will be comparing Europe's feudal system to Japans.
Testing Monday for Volume and Surface Area, New topic of Transformations next week.
