We have the first week of the fourth quarter under our belts! Can you believe it? Students began their last related arts rotation on Monday, the weather is getting warmer, and the days are getting longer. It's going to be difficult, but we need to buckle down and finish strong. An outside "screen free break" during the 11:00-12:30 time will do kids a lot of good, so please encourage them to get up and move around.
Scheduling
Parents and students should have attended an 8th Grade Scheduling meeting. Don't forget that schedule forms are due on March 16 for Karrer, and March 19 for Grizzell.

In ELA we continued our work from last week. Students learned the IQE (Introduce, Quote, Explain) technique for sharing quotations, they worked in small groups solving self selected problems: researching, planning and presenting solutions.
Phew! It's been a busy first week of the 4th quarter in ELA! We have learned a new Greek root (tang/ting/tig/tact which means touch, feel. Examples: tangible, contiguous, etc.) We also learned about expectations for our informative writing and already wrote our opening paragraph complete with a hook, central idea and our 3 big ideas. Next, we went on to drafting our body paragraphs that will be finished in the next week. These are well-developed paragraphs that will include a topic sentence, central ideas connections, transitions, 3 big ideas and concluding sentence. Next week, we will finish these body paragraphs and write our concluding paragraph as well as focusing on some informative reading and some more Greek roots!
I am so excited for this next week! Students have spent the last week building their foundational understanding around climate and biomes, and are now ready for their BIOME HOME BUILDING PROJECT. The planning began today and will continue into Monday. The "building" begins Tuesday. Depending on the kids' progress, I'm anticipating that final Biome Homes will be complete by the end of the week. Students will have class time to work on their Biome Home - either in the Class Google Meet or on their own. Students who finish their project before the end of the week will have Choice Activities (enrichment) to work on.
Once these Biome Homes are complete, students will showcase their architectural marvels (including a "show and tell" portion) on a Google Site.
Kids seem very excited about this project! You can learn more about it on the project website - Biome Home Builder.
We are learning about Global Winds! This week we will learn about the Jet Streams and look at real-time virtual models of what the jet streams look like! We will spend some time on ocean currents and will be finishing this unit soon!
We are into our study of the Middle Ages in Europe. We have learned that since there were no cars or designer labels, the item people used to show off their wealth was... books. Books that were painstakingly copied by hand and ornately illustrated including with gold leaf. These were called Illuminated Manuscripts. Your young scholar is currently creating their own illuminated letter, be sure to ask them to show you. Next week we will be discussing knights, the code of chivalry, and the Battle of Hastings. Uneasy is the head that wears the crown.
