Spring MAP Testing
MAP Testing will happen on May 6 and May 7, and will happen virtually (NOT in person). This is the final session of MAP for the year! Our RLA schedule will be adjusted so that students will miss their afternoon classes (Periods 5-7) on Thursday, May 6 for the Math MAP, and will miss their morning classes (Periods 1-4) on Friday, May 7 for the Reading MAP. Over the course of the two days, they will see all of their classes once. Students will be testing with their Independent Reading teacher. There will NOT be any asynchronous work those days since kids will be working hard on their testing!
Thursday, May 6, Math MAP Testing from 12:30-3:00
Friday, May 7, Reading MAP Testing from 8:00-11:00

This week we worked on writing persuasive (essay body) paragraphs that included well written topic sentences, substantive supporting details, concluding sentences and transitions. Students learned good supporting details include data, anecdotes, analysis, comparing and contrasting as well as cause and effect.
We dove deeper into argumentative writing this week--we took a stance on a chosen topic then started searching for reliable and credible sources. We also identified reasons to support our stance from the chosen sources and began analyzing the sources even further to find text evidence to support our reason. It's been a week full of reading and writing! Additionally, we finished our word study unit focusing on Greek roots and will have a quiz over these 5 new roots sometime next week.
And now for something completely different... We just started our unit on Chemistry and Matter! This 3-week unit will take what students learned in the past couple of years, and kick it up a notch. You will be amazed at what they'll be learning! Ask your kids about their "kitchen chemistry" hands-on experiments, and the online simulations. It should be a lot of fun.
If you have a chance this weekend to pick up some RED CABBAGE (it's the bright purple kind) and DISTILLED WATER, that'd allow you to make your own pH indicator and do a "kitchen chemistry" experiment at home. We'll be doing this Wednesday.
We are wrapping up our study of ecosystems and biomes! We will learn this week how ecosystems can heal through succession. Students will apply these ideas to their Biome Mix-Up Project. We have learned about energy transfer within an ecosystem and what limiting factors there are in a habitat's carrying capacity.
Our quiz on the Middle Ages was Tuesday and now we are looking at the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. We will be examining the power of the church and how it was challenged by both religious and secular grounds. Our scholars will be choosing an event from the period and writing a news story answering the key questions.
This week, we wrapped up the decline of feudalism and talked about how the Black Plague and COVID-19 compare and contrast. Next week, we begin learning about the Renaissance and flex our creative muscles as we become the artists!
Finishing up Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres with a Quiz Tuesday. Stats are next.
