Flu Shots for Dublin Students
Free flu shots will be available to students this school year. You can view the schedule and required forms at this link. RLA students may go to any school for their flu shots. Families may take all students to one building. Be sure to complete the first form and return it 48 hours before the day of the shot to the school building where you want to get the flu shot. The second form needs to be completed and taken with you on the day of the flu shot.
Groups have finished our book discussion for Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton. Students gave the book an average score of 8.5 points in review on a 1-10 scale. Our conversation centered around how one brave individual can impact change IF they are willing to be consistent and persist even when facing struggles and push back. The topic of racism in a small Vermont town during the time of the civil rights movement has parallels to current events. Students felt strongly about the use of poetic verse to share the main character, Mimi Oliver's, feelings. They either really liked it or really disliked it. Students used excellent critical thinking in our conversations.
In class we are working with 5 strategies for reading difficult text. Students are in the process of completing skills checks in NEWSELA and we will be learning about sign posts to promote comprehension.
We have finished our first read aloud, Count Me In, and are wrapping up our culminating activities that go along with the book. Students are working on a Literary Elements assignment as well as an objective summary writing piece.
Then, mid-week, we will begin our Greek unit: exploring The Adventures of Ulysses, giving background knowledge to prepare for the unit and learning some Greek roots. Just a reminder that this book needs to be purchased by all students!
We wrapped up our study of WAVES today! Students worked hard and learned a lot about sound & light waves. Maybe they even had some fun while they learned! Here's a "taste" of what they've been working on. Our next unit of study will be Earth Systems.
Heat Transfer - Thermal-energy transfers in the ocean and the atmosphere contribute to the formation of currents, which influence global climate patterns. Energy can be transferred through a variety of ways. Energy can be transformed or transferred but is never lost.
Water Cycle - The hydrologic cycle illustrates the changing states of water as it moves through the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Thermal-energy transfers in the ocean and the atmosphere contribute to the formation of currents, which influence global climate patterns
We are done with our waves unit. Students learned a ton and worked really hard! Our next unit will be Heat Transfer. We will discuss how heat and energy moves around our world and how that affects our everyday lives. We will be making connections to real world applications as we go.
This week we began our Greek City State competition. Students are currently working on creating their shield logo and banner. They have also done an amazing job at memorizing the Greek alphabet. Be sure to act your scholar to recite it for you. There will be a quiz next week.
This week, the kids had a blast in their Greece Teams working through our Greece Geography Objectives - ultimately, the goal is for students to be able to explain how geographic location and physical features can impede or promote cultural diffusion. Huge shout out to those who participated in the Cultural Diffusion Interviews. I had an absolutely blast watching you and your children interact and you added a wonderful perspective to our class discussions. Next week, we will have a Greece Geography Terms quiz on Tuesday (there is a Quizlet for study on Schoology!). On Wednesday, students will be assessed on the objectives - this will be a written response assessment that students will get ahead of time in order to prepare. Excited to move on to government late next week.
We will be working on Two-Step Equations and Inequalities this week.

This week we will continue working on the color theory we learned last week and develop our fall leaf paintings!
This week in art we are starting our last unit “What’s My Story” This will be a narrative work of art and the students can choose to create this artwork 2-D or 3-D.
This week we began exploring music theory. We worked on the notes of the treble and bass clef and students had time to explore elements of music theory that interested them the most. Next week, we will continue music theory and use Chrome Music Lab to translate our knowledge to the keyboard!
We continued our music theory exploration this week as well as learning a drumming ensemble from the Ewe people of Ghana. We will continue to work on the polyrhythmic Ewe drumming next week as well as music theory. Each class will be working on recording various parts in a song they have chosen to make a video. When all the parts are edited together, we will have created our own music ensemble!
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.
