State Testing
It was wonderful to see so many of our RLA students in the building during testing! It must have been strange, exciting, and perhaps even scary for students to walk through the doors, many after over a year away. We look forward to a time when we can all be back together again.
Gifted Identification
Gifted identification for RLA students will take place during the designated spring assessment referral window and is coordinated through Gifted Services. Information was shared with families via email and is available to RLA families here.

This week we have reviewed the differences between thesis statements and topic sentences. Students wrote introductory paragraphs for their advocacy speeches in class. Introductory paragraphs should include:
a hook to get your readers attention that is clear, concise and catchy
background information
a thesis statement that defines the focus of your essay requiring explanation
This week we learned a new Greek root as part of our word study unit (cid/cis)--this was our first new root in a few weeks due to state testing and spring break! We also began our new writing unit on argumentative writing. Part of our learning included the purpose of an argument and highlighting pros/cons of a focused topic in a reading passage and the text evidence to support it. Next week we will go deeper into this unit and learn the parts of an argument.
Science students have been digging into the complex relationships between populations of animals within communities. Did you know that a small pack of wolves re-introduced into Yellowstone Park not only had the desired affect of reducing the overpopulation of Elk, but also had an impact on the physical geography of the area?
We've also been talking about the human impact of roads, fences, power lines, pipelines, and housing developments break animal habitats into small and often inaccessible pieces? Students learned why that is a problem both economically and for biodiversity, then they learned about wildlife bridges. They even had a chance to collaborate to design their own wildlife corridor for a specific species!
Our Quiz (Populations/Communities, Food Webs/Energy Pyramids, Succession, and Cycles (Carbon & Nitrogen) will be on Thursday, 4/22. I'd encourage students to try out the practice test to see how well they understand this content.
Did you know you can see every biome in the Star Wars Movies?? Zootopia has neighborhoods based on biomes. Minecraft too! From Disney to Harry Potter, we can see evidence of biomes throughout the media we view. Students have learned about the different biomes and are working on collecting scenes from movies, tv shows, and games to depict the different biomes. This week, we have discussed the climactic factors that lead to these different biomes.
We will add to these movie scenes as we move on to discuss abiotic and biotic factors that effect these biomes. We will then "mix-up" some of these factors and explore the effects on the biome. How would the movie Alladin change if it were in a different biome? What would happen if we put Simba in the tundra? What effects would these new species have on that biome? Would Simba be invasive? What would he need to change in order to adapt to this new biome? We will explore questions like these as we continue our studies in the biosphere!
This week, we learned more about the Crusades - what caused it, who fought, who won, what was the result... Next week, we learn how the Crusades aided the decline of feudalism along with other elements that contributed.
