May 18-22, 2020

Standards Addressed

  • I can describe the characteristics of objects in our solar system (including proximity to the Sun, the presence of water, and composition of the atmosphere).

  • I can analyze those characteristics and relate them to how they allow life to exist on a planet.

Resources Recommended

Have your student login to their Conroe ISD SSO in order to have access to suggested resources.

1. Let’s Talk: How is it possible for humans and other organisms to live and survive on planet Earth? What characteristics does Earth have that other planets do not?

2. Characteristics of Earth – There are three main characteristics that allow life to exist on planet Earth. Describe the importance of each.

3. Solar System 101 – Brief video over our solar system.

May 11-15, 2020

Standards Addressed

  • I can describe human activities that impact groundwater, surface water, and watersheds.

Resources Recommended

Have your student login to their Conroe ISD SSO in order to have access to suggested resources.

1. Discovery Education: Watersheds – Short video that offers information about watersheds and how rainfall can affect groundwater.

2. Let’s Talk: Take a look around your house, yard, or neighborhood. What are some ways that human activities in your area impact our water system?

May 4-8, 2020

Standards Addressed

  • I can define groundwater and surface water.

  • I can describe a watershed.

Resources Recommended

Have your student login to their Conroe ISD SSO in order to have access to suggested resources.

1. Discovery Education: Groundwater Watch the animation video provided. There are various parts, including information about groundwater, aquifers, and more. Answer the questions that follow:

· What is groundwater?

· What is an aquifer?

· Describe how the water cycle relates to groundwater.

· What is “depletion of groundwater”?

2. Let’s Talk: Take a look around your house, yard, or neighborhood. What happens to the water when it rains? Does it drain well or does collect in certain areas? Why or why not?

April 27- May 1, 2020

Standards Addressed

  • I can describe the different steps in ecological succession.

  • I can recognize the difference between primary and secondary succession.

  • I can correctly sequence the steps of ecological succession.

Resources Recommended

1. Let’s Talk: In your backyard, front yard, or nearby area of land or a garden, study the plants and animals that are in that area. What would happen if you cleared out that land? What would start to grow first? How would that bit of land change over a year of time?

2. Mount Saint Helen’s – Time Lapse Video: In 1980, Mount Saint Helen’s erupted. Study the short video. How did the land change after the eruption? How did the land change from the year 1981 to 2001?

April 20-24, 2020

1. Let’s Talk: Floods – with your student, talk about how recent floods have impacted the various ecosystems around the Conroe area. How has the landscape changed? How did this affect wildlife?

2. Discovery Education: Video

The Dust Bowl – Science and History Meet; in this video segment, students learn about the catastrophic event of the 1920’s known as The Dust Bowl. The combination of drought and over-farming brought on one of the most catastrophic events in history.
