Guidance for Parents of Students Receiving Special Education Services During An Extended School Closure

Overview:

Conroe ISD ensures that, to the greatest extent possible, each student with a disability will be provided the special education and related services identified in the student’s IEP. There is no one size fits all guidance for providing services to each student. Services could range from online or virtual instruction, instructional telephone calls, other curriculum based instructional activities, or any combination of these strategies. Campus teams will be reviewing each student’s IEP to determine the student’s individual needs. If services necessary for the provision of FAPE cannot be effectively delivered using alternate methods, the ARDC will meet to determine if some of the services can be provided and how that will be done. Once school resumes, the ARDC will reconvene to address the impact on the student’s skills and consider necessary next steps. The campus case manager/teacher will be the point of contact for parents’ questions. The campus case manager/teacher will have access to the student’s IEP team in order to collaborate on making individualized decisions about instruction for the student. The campus case manager/teacher will be providing activities/assignments and data collection methods based on the student’s IEP to parents during this time.

Suggestions for working with Students at home:

  • Maintain a clear and predictable daily schedule : Individual student schedules based on student’s IEP can be provided by campus case manager/teacher

  • Use visual supports to make directions and learning expectations clear: Individual student visual supports based on student’s IEP can be provided by campus case manager/teacher

  • Use positive reinforcement to motivate student learning: Individual student positive behavior supports that are based on student’s IEP can be provided by campus case manager/teacher

  • Have patience: Enjoy your time working with your child and celebrate their learning with them

More specific resources and guidance will be shared as we continue to gather information and plan to meet student needs in district service classes (AIM, Life Skills, RISE, PPCD, and SDC).
