Guidance for Parents of Students Who are English learners

Overview:

English learners (ELs) are a diverse group of students, with different language, academic, and social-emotional needs. They are students who come from non-English speaking homes who are learning English. Students who speak the same language or have similar levels of language proficiency may need very different kinds of support to succeed in the classroom. For this reason, they require accommodated instruction in academic courses. Accommodations do not reduce learning expectations. They allow educators to meet the responsive goals of instruction and assessment. In order to best accommodate instructional content for ELs, it’s important to understand their level of English proficiency and use appropriate strategies for the level of language development. Below you will find strategies that are useful and aligned to the students’ English proficiency in each language domain.
