Writer's Statement:
I titled it this way because the game is called “Risk of Rain” and when people say it’s “bad weather” they usually refer to rain (Risk of Unfortunate Events.)
I like to think about it as the rain has began to pour because Commando has arrived in this unknown space.
Risk of Rain 2 is a video game that I have played for probably a year now. It has been something that I occasionally play during the pandemic and have over 240hours on.
I chose to do this because the draft was something that I had put effort into and had to be creative with. I have played this game a lot and to see some sort of short story definitely sounds cool.
Inspiration of the draft was one of Mrs. Kurtz creative writings and the game as a whole is the inspiration for writing this.
You may not realize that you enjoy something for more than just entertainment. Risk of Rain 2 is something that I have had fun playing and am passionate (I guess this word works) to write about. You have a lot of creative power, you just need to find the right place to use it(?)

Entry Log #1
Crash. The door to the pod opens, air flowing it. I step out on the ground, grass at my feet. I don’t know where I am or why. Two pistols at my side. I am a commando operative. I am agile and slim with an orange-black suit and a helmet.. The land is large with broken arches in the distance, at least I think. I start walking over to them. They’re massive and connect from the lip of a ledge to the ground. I can’t even guess what type of material that would be made of.
“God, where am I?” I mutter quietly. A crackling noise makes itself apparent and a group of lizard looking creatures stand around me. I count 3 all opposite of each other. They stand with a neck bent forward and on two feet. Their eyes are purely white, no pupils, irises, just an eyeball. Seconds apart, fire generates from their mouth. Panicked, I quickly started shooting before I could communicate. 3 shots I take down the first. Two balls of fire fly to sandwich me, I roll out of the way, whilst toggling a switch on my pistols, firing 6 shots in rapid succession. With the death of these creatures I don’t have time to think.
Scattered around the ground I can see very few boxes. I approached one of them and some sort of hologram appeared.
“$25”
“What the hell? Money, where am I supposed to get money?!” I yelled. That’s when I take notice of something on the top right of my helmet. Some sort of HUD displaying two numbers with symbols, one symbol is a generic dollar sign, the other however, I have no clue.
“I can’t recall having any money until after I killed-” I hear weird noises above me, a mixture of flames and something from a video game. Floating, flaming heads surround me. Without a second to react, all of them begin to lock some sort of laser on me. I slide a few feet forward, but they all still shot. I was hit by what felt like 12 projectiles, yet there were only 5 of them. I turn around, toggling the switch on my pistols and kill two of the heads. My adrenaline is high, I’m injured and scared. My aim is wobbly, I can’t hit a shot. They’re all grouped together a few feet in front of me, looking ready to attack again. Click. My finger is pressed on a button on one of my pistols. They both emit a noise and some sort of blast comes out of my guns, like a shotgun. The 3 remaining heads disappeared, no head, trace, anything. It was only then I noticed that my pistols weren’t regular sized.
I noticed that I had gotten more money from killing them, only one or two dollars from a singular head. I was relieved, heavy breathing was clouding my vision. I remembered about the chest I saw. I kicked it around a few times, trying to figure out how to open it. I was utterly confused and becoming more anxious as I was afraid something else was going to attack. I looked straight at the chest and a menu popped up saying “Buy? [Y/N].” I had no idea what prompted this to appear. I clicked yes and the chest’s lid swung wide open and a white ball of light came out of the chest. It landed on the ground and turned into a
“Crowbar? What the f*ck! The chest that I just risked my life to open gave me a damn crowbar!? I swear I can’t d-” I picked it up to swing it at the chest when something interrupted me. A message displaying the word “Crowbar” with a picture of it and a description. “Deal more damage to healthy enemies.” Damage? Like kill things faster?
Soon enough I begin to understand what type of world I am in, or at least a grasp. I kill monsters to gain currency, use said currency to buy items which would allow me to kill them faster. I get a grip of myself. I see something lie on the ground, a cassette tape looking item. I walk over to it and see it’s called “WIsp.” A whole ton of data is screened into my helmet and I see an image of the floating head. I skim through the reading and discover those floating heads were called wisp and they shoot 3 bolts very quickly.
I can hear part of the ground beginning to rumble. I have my finger at the ready to blast whatever comes out of it. It sets me off ease though. I don’t know what this land has in store… Something big rises out of the ground, one eye, one red eye in the middle of rocks. Rocks? Yes rocks. It’s at least a few feet taller than me and a lot bigger. I- I- Static
