Writer's statement: My letter connects to the pandemic because it’s all about me and my life after it. It is about how much everything has changed. I chose to write a letter to myself because I don’t know what I want for my future yet, and I wonder if my future me will. I didn’t have much for inspiration other than my bucket list and random questions I wonder for my future. I hope the audience that reads this will wonder these same questions, or even have these questions answered for themselves (aside from the questions about my own family of course.)
Dear future Skyler,
What are you up to right now? I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re old enough, where are you living? Are you happy there? I hope so. Do you still want to go to Japan, or have you already? How did your high school bucket list go? I wonder if you hit the 5-item goal. If you haven’t met Eric in person yet then what are you waiting for! If you haven’t yet properly figured out what you want to do, then take a break from stuff for a bit to find out. For us. Are you still friends with anybody from Oregon and do you still remember Lane Curry? Do you still have Brownie the bear and Galactic Pup? I’m interested in how your music taste and playlist has developed over time. I really like the current one. Are you still interested in horror? Have you decided your actual favorite movie yet? I feel like that question might get harder and harder as more movies come out. Do you still have the Charlotte Holmes books? Also did they make any more of them, or will there always be just the four. I really love those books, I hope I still do when you’re reading this. When did the quarantine end, god forbid it’s SOMEHOW still going. How are your relatives? Are they healthy? Did Cailynn get to be what she wanted to be in Soccer? Is Tolen way too smart for you? How old is Landon now? Has Jack actually picked a favorite sports team? Does Minecraft exist anymore? Do games as I know them exist at all anymore? Have they gotten incredibly advanced or are things generally the same? My last question is wondering if you got what you’ve always properly wanted. Maybe then what you’ve properly wanted has even changed. I couldn’t know. I won’t tell you what it is because it is solely up to you in the future. Good luck, I’m rooting for us.
