Lately, I’ve spent a vast amount of time in my house. When you spend this much time in one place, you tend to get bored. As a result of being as bored as I am, I’ve spent a lot of my time looking for new music. My entire childhood was filled with all kinds of music, both my parents love music so no matter what day it was or what time of day it was, I was surrounded by Bob Marely, Elton John, and countless others. So, with all this time on my hands, I decided I would look for new music that I could enjoy.
In my search, I found an intriguing band called The Wallows. One of the things that first drew me to them was their album’s Nothing Happens cover. The cover was just a close up photo of a blue and white striped t-shirt. It’s not anything special, but something about it was particularly appealing. And with that in mind, I listened to the 39 minute album in one sitting, doing nothing but listening.
Long story short, the album was incredible. Imagine an alternative high school garage band that somehow made it big. That’s essentially what their music sounds like, with loud instruments and lyrics that you can barely understand because their instruments are just so intense. And while it might seem like a slight to the album, that’s not what I mean at all. You see, The Wallows have mastered putting an unbelievable amount of feeling into their instruments.
After spending 39 minutes listening to the entire album, I had found a new band that I could listen to wherever, whenever. Because even though sometimes their songs feel repetitive, it’s a good kind of repetition, like a theme they wanted to carry throughout the album. I would recommend Nothing Happens if you like indie alt-rock, because that’s exactly what this is! Also, if you like to sing along to songs with a solid beat, this album is for you.
