The reason I chose to write a short story about doctors is I feel like they are not quite given the appreciation that they deserve. While obviously they are being recognized, I still feel as if people just disregard them in a way and think “oh it’s their job to do it”. I just wanted to sort of show how brave they have to be in order to do their job, and what we can do to help them during the pandemic. The inspiration from this came from reading firsthand accounts of doctors, and it made me realize how much they go through everyday. I just hope that anyone who reads this just develops a greater appreciation for frontline health care workers or essential workers, and also realizes their own responsibility to help them and the community.
The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked a lot of change in the world, and forced all of us to come together to try and fight the pandemic. While it has put responsibility on all of us to social distance, it has put tremendous ones on others. Specifically healthcare workers. In my opinion, healthcare workers are the true heroes amid the pandemic. Covid-19 has forced them to work long shifts in dangerous conditions, risk their own lives to save those who have been infected, and I believe that we should really honor them and the sacrifices they have to make. Doctors and nurses alike.
Their sheer braveness and desire to help people is incredible. In fact Dr. Walton who is a clinician at Brigham Women’s Hospital and CEO of Build Health International said “I’m very comfortable “MacGyvering” I think I put my risk of falling ill within the understandable risk of doing my job. This is what we signed up for.” Various accounts from doctors around the world show them keeping a positive outlook and positive mentality despite the daunting prospect that things will get worse. They seem to put themselves last, and put everyone else first, from lower income communities that will be infected, patients, etc.
I just find it unbelievable that these healthcare workers have the courage to go and save people's lives and fight corona everyday. I think it’s our duty as citizens and just people to do our best to help them, whether it’s donating, social distancing, or just sending them a letter or text. In fact, Dr. Paris, who is an emergency medicine physician, and has been treating COVID-19 patients for more than three weeks, said: “What gets me through the day are the texts, phone calls and meals sent from my friends and family constantly reminding me that they’re rooting for me and love me.” These small acts are the things that we should do to help these frontline care workers and support them in saving lives.
To every health care worker, or essential worker, I would just like to say from the bottom of my heart thank you for everything that you do for us and our community, and you are some of the bravest and best souls out there.
