Time Capsule Pandemic Project

June 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mountainside High School locked its doors on March 13, 2020 and shifted to online learning for the rest of the school year. Students, teachers, and families faced the challenge of how to live and learn in this new reality. Students were encouraged to express their thoughts, ideas, or reflections to the pandemic in a variety of ways. This time capsule is a collection of their creative responses.

For many students, poetry proved to be the ultimate way to capture what their life was like during this strange time. In their words, "Poems are words that are put together to tell a story but also leave a reader thinking," and this medium was chosen because, "...a poem felt more intimate."

The following collection features poetry about numerous events that occurred during the global pandemic.

Sometimes you just have to let it sing. Check out these students sing original songs about their place in the pandemic.

Discover the next David Fincher, Spike Lee, and/or Kathryn Bigelow before anyone else.

Inspired by their dreams, nightmares, favorite shows, video games, and other quarantine distractions, students followed their muses to create this collection of short stories.

Other students created work using a variety of mediums: marker, pen, pencil, paint, photography, digital apps, and mixed mediums.

Students responded the crisis by creating a variety of different text types: journals, letters, music and book reviews, advice columns, speeches, and bucket lists. Their personal reflective pieces can be found here.

What better way to kill the time during quarantine than to play a game? Or even make up your own? These students designed and played games with family and friends.
