Scientific Tools and Forces of Motion
In September, our third-grade scientists examined various objects using scientific tools to measure their volume, size, weight, appearance, and temperature. They learned that each tool serves a specific purpose and requires careful handling. The girls had a fantastic time exploring with these hands-on tools and applying their new skills. Great job, girls!
Additionally, the students explored the forces of friction and gravity, learning how an object's surroundings can determine its position. They used maps, race tracks, and playgrounds to understand location.
In another experiment, the young scientists tested how long different folds of paper took to reach the ground. They discovered that gravity and air resistance directly affect the motion of falling objects: gravity accelerates objects downward, while air resistance acts against motion, slowing them down. Ultimately, they learned that objects with more surface area fall more slowly due to increased air resistance.
Science Scavenger Hunt
The third-grade students began their year with an outdoor scavenger hunt designed to review the science concepts they had previously learned. Before going outside, the students discussed topics such as magnetism, buoyancy, natural resources, and the states and properties of matter. During the hunt, they identified moving objects, measured shadows, and observed clouds, among other things. The third-grade scientists worked diligently and are now prepared to expand their scientific knowledge this year!
