Exploring Scientific Tools Used for Measurement and Observation
The 4th-grade girls are discovering that scientific tools are essential instruments used to investigate the world around us. While exploring tools for observation, they refracted light using prisms, viewed slides through microscopes, tested magnetic principles, and inspected natural items with hand lenses.
Working in teams, the young scientists also measured mass, force, length, time, volume, and temperature. They used balance scales, spring scales, meter sticks, stopwatches, graduated cylinders, and thermometers to complete their hands-on investigations. To wrap up the exploration, the girls discovered how and why scientists graph data to analyze their results and communicate their findings. Outstanding work, girls!
Scientific Diagrams
Welcome to 4th-grade science! This month, the students started by completing a "Science About Me" notebook entry. They researched the phase of the moon that occurred on the day they were born, measured their heights in centimeters, recorded their favorite science topics, and illustrated their preferred uses of electricity. Air conditioning, phones, and computers were a few favorites!
Additionally, the girls selected an object found in nature to explore and document. After examining their object, they created a detailed diagram following the ABCD guidelines (Accurate, Big, Colorful, Detailed). Using the ABCD method, the young scientists sketched and labeled their scientific drawings. Great job, 4th grade!
