***Activities***
Students designed personalized Christmas gift tags using the Paint program, learning to use tools such as the brush, spray can, and fill tool. They had the freedom to choose whether the design would display an indoor or outdoor scene. Once their designs were completed, each one was inserted into a Google Docs table, where it was duplicated to create a set of nine tags for each student. These tags were intended to be used on Christmas gifts that the students would give to others.
Google Slides: Thanksgiving Animation
Students learned how to make stop-motion animation using Google Slides. Students selected a background color on a blank slide. Then they added an image to a slide and duplicated that slide. On the duplicated slide, the image was moved a short distance. The whole process was repeated approximately 40 times. Once that was done, the slideshow was converted into a .gif file using an app extension called Creator Studio, and the animation was created.
Google Classroom
Students access their technology in-class assignments via Google Classroom. It is a classroom management app that is a part of the G-suite. Students login with their school account and can see all assignments that have been posted. They can turn in Google assignments such as a document or slide presention. It is easy and fun for students to use.
Google Docs
Students created a flyer about their summer using Google Docs. The title was "My T-rrific Summer." They added a picture related to their summer activities. Students chose a fun font, and how to use word art to create unique color combinations. When their flyer was printed it was cut in the shape of a t-shirt.
Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship lessons are taught throughout the school year. Students are taught how to be responsible and respectful online citizens. This includes being kind and considerate of others, understanding the impact of their words and actions, keeping their personal information, as well as that of others, private, and the importance of adult supervision by a trusted adult. By instilling these principles early on, students learn to navigate the internet with a sense of awareness, responsibility, and empathy.
Sample activity from Media Literacy Lessons by Google
In this activity, students described themselves using words and emojis. The goals for the students were:
Learn the importance of asking the question: How might others see this message from me differently
Grow Awareness of the many visual cues people use to communicate
See that sharing something online as well as on a t-shirt is making media
Learn what "context" and "representation" mean.
Keyboarding
Students practice keyboarding throughout the year. They practice proper finger placement, good posture and looking at the screen and not their fingers. Students can work at their own pace as they work toward increasing their speed while improving their accuracy. The main typing program used is Dance Mat Typing but students can practice using other fun apps on the Tech Cafe website.
Coding
Students learn the basics of programming in a fun, engaging, and simple way. Code.org educates kids on the tools to tell a computer what to do. Coding is simply giving instructions to a computer, so it knows how to do something, similar to giving a recipe to a chef. It's the step by step directions that make a dish. In coding, we give instructions to make games, websites, apps, and more! The students learned about conditionals, loops and more using this block-based coding software.
TinkerCAD (Computer Aided Design) & 3D printing
Tinkercad is like a free, online program that allows students to create 3-dimensional designs. As part of the digital citizenship curriculum, students learned about computer viruses and how to protect their devices. They designed their own virus using their imagination on what they thought a virus would look like. They picked the color they wanted for their virus and printed them on the 3D printer.
Students used Tinkercad to create a simple cross to put on their chalices for the Mass of Thanksgiving. They were printed on the 3D printer and displayed in the chapel during the mass.
