The first graders made multimedia pictures of birds among snowy birch trees. They began by using black paint and cardboard to make the trees look realistic. Next they drew and painted two birds of their choice. They glued the trees and birds onto blue paper and finished by adding snow using white paint and Q-tips.
The first graders celebrated Black History Month by studying the artist Jacob Laurent. His paintings are full of colorful shapes covered with various designs, surrounded by a squggly white line. The students used colored construction paper to make interesting shapes, glued them to black paper, and then added designs using colored pencils. They finished by adding a squiggly line surrounding the shapes with a white pen.
The first graders learned about printmaking. They sketched out pictures of bunnies on regular paper and then put their drawings on top of styrofoam sheets. Using a lot of pressure, they traced over the lines with a dull pencil. They learned the difference between paint and printing ink and the definition of a brayer (ink roller). Finally, they inked up their styrofoam plates and transferred their drawings to a pieces of paper.
EASTER BUNNY PRINTS
The first graders did a fun little snail project to help them learn to draw spirals. They also learned the word "whimsical" and saw how a black outline can make a colorful picture really POP!
