2024-2025
Students in Kindergarten learned about International Games Month. We talked about what the word "international" means and read two different picture books about the game of "Telephone" gone awry. The girls then tried their hand at a game of telephone! After checking books out, they could design their own puzzle...another kind of game!
Kindergarten students read The Boy Who Loved Maps, a Louisiana Young Readers' Choice nominated title. After reading together, they then drew their own maps of the Library!
Kindergarten students became history detectives to look for clues to try to determine what was happening in the picture. What do you think is happening? When was the photo taken? This photo, from the Library of Congress' collection, shows Margaret Lally voting in New York City in 1918, during the first election in New York City for which women could vote. Students learned the word "confidentiality," and we then read Ann Patchett and Robin Glasser's Lambslide about lambs who hold an election for the farm to get a lambslide. Guess what! The lambslide wins by a landslide!
To get ready for Halloween, kindergarten students worked together to build their own "monster." Each student rolled a die and counted the number of dots to determine how many eyes/ears/heads/tails their monster would have. They then came up with a name for their monster. For example, meet Fluffy Bill and Goo Goo Ga Ga.
Kindergarten students became history detectives! Looking at primary sources, they discussed what they see, think, and wonder. Using these "clues," they learned about how mail was delivered by mail trains in the 1900s.
2023-2024
After talking about "responsibility" and proper book care, Kindergarten students checked out books for the FIRST time from the Sacred Heart library. Lots of excellent choices! And more where those came from :)
Kindergarten students learned how to take care of their library books: Keep them away from pets, keep them dry, make sure your hands are clean before you read your book, and, if something happens to your book, tell Mrs. Holmes...who will use her "magic" library tape to fix it!
2022-2023
October is Louisiana Archaeology month! To celebrate, students in kindergarten learned about archaeologists, studied some urban garbage to learn about a family, and then discovered artifacts in blocks of ice.
After learning about book care and the responsibility of having a library book, Kindergarten checked out their first books!
2021-2022
Kindergarten learned about the elements of the story. Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end! They then acted out the story of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff."
After reading "What Can You Do with a Rock," students decorated their own rocks with pictures and inspiring words!
Kindergarten learned about insects. They then made their own insects using play-do, pipe cleaners, buttons, and Q-tips.
After using primary sources to learn about HATS, kindergarten designed the hat that they would wear for their future career. There were artists, chefs, doctors, and professional supermodels!
Acting out Grace Lin's Bringing in the New Year to celebrate the Lunar New Year!
Kindergarten learned about their Kumushas and then drew their Kumushas with author Sydney Zifodya/
Kindergarten celebrates Pajama Day, but Mrs. Holmes was ASLEEP in the Library!!!
