Australian Dot Paintings
The second graders studied the art of Australian dot painting. We talked about the meaning of indigenous tribes and how people carry on traditions of those who came before them. The indigenous people of Australia made dot paintings of animals that are common to the area as well as handprints. The students traced their hands on black paper and used Q-tips to make their dots.
Nutcrackers
The second graders talked about the history of nutcrackers. They followed a step-by-step video to learn how to draw the basic shapes of a nutcracker and then added their own details. They used colored pencils to add color to their work.
Lois Mailou Jones
The second graders celebrated Black History Month by studying the art of African American artist Lois Mailou Jones. They created multi-media pictures using Sharpie, crayons, and water colors. They incorporated African mask drawings into their work did LM Jones.
