2024-2025
First grade students looked at pieces of a primary source map from the Library of Congress' collection, the Waldseemuller Map from 1507. They noted what they see, think, and wonder about the map. They then pieced the whole map together before reading The Boy Who Loved Maps. (This is one of thei 2024-2025 nominees for the Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Awards!) They started designing their own map of the Library.
First grade students learned more about some of the books in the Library's collection as they played Halloween Book Bingo. After seeing some of the titles and covers, as independent users of the library, students then checked out books.
After reminders about book care and how to check out books in the library, first grade students learned about the organization of the library. Fiction books are organized alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name. First grade students made their own book covers with spine labels.

MAPS!!!
Using a primary source map from 1887, first grade students explored what used to be where the Mater Campus is now. In 1887, there was a well in the middle of what became the library?! Students took a walk around the block with their maps to see what was different and what was the same.
Students in first grade learned about Pura Belpre, who was the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York and who told and wrote stories in English and Spanish, creating the first bilingual storytime. Belpre was also famous for her use of puppets in storytime. Sacred Heart students then made their own puppets!
First grade started to learn about how the library organizes its 19,000+ books! They learned that every book has its own address (the "call number.") They then learned that the call number for fiction books is FIC + the first 3 letters of the author's last name. They then became authors, decorating their own book covers and creating their own spine labels using the first 3 letters of their last name.
2022-2023
First grade students learned that the Fiction and Everything books in the Library are organized alphabetically by the author's last name. They then made their own book covers and spine labels and organized themselves into alphabetical order by their last names.
