Types of Test Questions

※ Among the question types, essay and file response can't be graded automatically

  1. Multiple Choice/Multiple Answer

  • Students select one or more answers from several choices.

a. Multiple Choice: Students select only one answer

b. Multiple Answer Question: Students select one or more answers

[Presentation Option]

  • Answer Numbering: Select among Arabic Numerals, Roman Numerals, Upper Case Letters, Lower Case Letters

  • Answer Orientation: Select among Vertical/Horizontal

  • Show Answers in Random Order: Answer choices are shown in random order to each student

[Scoring Option]

  • Partial Credit/Negative Score: Enter the partial/negative credit percentage in the Partial Credit % box.

a. Allow Partial Credit: Even if the answer is partially incorrect, partial credit can be given for the selected answer.

b. Allow Negative Scores for Incorrect Answers: this appears when 'allow partial credit' is activated. When an incorrect answer is selected, negative credit can be given

2. Essay/Short Answer

  • Essay questions require students to type an answer in a text box

b. [Short Answer]: Set the number of rows that will display in the answer field (1~6 rows)

  • Option: The Instructor can create sample answers in the answer text box for students to check after the test

3. Jumbled Sentence

  • Jumbled sentence questions require a student to complete a sentence, choosing words from a drop-down list.

  • The order of drop-down list is assigned depending on the numerical number

4. Fill in the Blank/Multiple blanks

  • A Fill in blank question requires students to provide the correct answer in a blank space

  • Write the text clearly to see where the answer is placed in the context of the passage

a. Fill in the Blank: use parenthesis ( ) or underscore _ to specify where the answer is placed

(Ex.) The capital city of Korea is ________ / Christmas is on ______th of December

b. Multiple Blanks: use variables to specify where the answer is placed

(Ex.) The three kingdoms of Korea are [A] in the northern part, [B] in the middle west, and [c] in the south east part of Korea

  • Number of Answers: you can add answer choices from 2~100

  • Select 'Contains, Exact Match, Pattern Match

a. Contains: abbreviation, and partial answers are accepted

b. Exact Match: only texts that exactly match the answer are accepted

c. Pattern Match: even if the text does not match, answers with a certain pattern are accepted

5. Calculated Formula/Numeric

  • This requires students to make a calculation and respond with a numeric answer

a. Calculated Formula: When a question is presented to a student, the system replaces the variable with a value that is randomly selected from the range(minimum/maximum value) you defined

b. Calculated Numeric: The answer is the specific value or a range of values

  • Frame questions in a way that it is clear that students should enter a numeric answer

  • Calculated Formula: put the variables in the brackets

Ex. If a small glass can hold [x] ounces of water, and a large glass can hold [y] ounces of water, what's the total number of ounces in 4 large and 3 small glasses of water?

  • Calculated Formula: Enter the mathematical expression used to find the correct answer in the 'Formula Box'

a. Choose operators from the functions across the top of the Answer Formula box

Ex. (x x 3) + (y x 4)

b. Range of answers: the exact range of answers that are awarded full/partial credit

  • For Calculated Formula, create answer sets: Assign answer sets of questions and answers that can be generated within the chosen variable range

6. Ordering Questions

  • Students select the correct order of a series of items

  • Create questions in a way students can understand that they should arrange the answers in a specific order

Ex. List the four oceans from the largest to the smallest

  • Number of Answers: the answers are to be listed in order (answers can be entered up to 100)

  • Order of Answers: Add the answers in the correct order

  • Display Order: Drag the answers in the Display Order column to determine how they appear

7. True/False & Either/Or

  • Students choose true or false in response to a statement question

a. Either/Or: You can choose the type of answer choices namely Yes/No, Agree/Disagree, Right/Wrong, True/False

b. True/False: In this type of question, the answers are marked true or false

  • Partial Credit option not available

8. Matching

  • Students pair items in the prompts column to items in the answers column

  • Additional answers are distractors that don't match any of the prompts and increase the question's difficulty.

(Ex. 'Match the capital to the country' or 'Match each living thing to its proper category'

  • Number of answers: Select the number of answers for matching questions (minimum 4~maximum 100)

  • Question/Answer pair: Create a set of questions and answers to be seen in column

a. Prompt columns are listed in chronological order

b. Answer column can be listed by selecting Randomly/Manually in the answer order option

9. File Response

  • For File Response Questions, students upload files as the answer to the question

  • This is not recommended since it might take long hours to go over the answers

a. You can not download only the uploaded file

b. If you want to get the file from students, use the assignment page

  • It is not recommended to create test questions using file response only

  • You need to grade these questions manually
