Report article about Mr. Wong’s seminar
Do you feel lost with your career? If you do, the seminar that was held by our school’s career counselling committee their morning would help you. The talk gave our schoolmates some insights into their career. The seminar was led by a social worker, Mr. Wong. In the seminar, he shared with our schoolmates some important qualities employers are looking for.
At the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Wong quoted a motto ‘having good academic qualifications seems having a good start of your career.’ Mr. Wong told our schoolmates two reasons why they have to study hard for good academic results. First, having sound academic qualifications is a minimum requirement for jobs. If we could not meet the requirement, we would have much fewer opportunities. He quoted a saying, ‘The better the academic qualifications you have, the wider the range of jobs you can do.’ Second, having good academic qualifications is a standard for employers to know if you are suitable for the position. Employers would prefer hiring a candidate with good academic results rather than one with poor ones because the academic performance could reflect the working qualities of the applicants to some extent. For example, it can help an employer understand some particular abilities of the applicants and whether they are capable.
Reflected by some employers, Mr. Wong said that there were some common problems found among current young people in workplace. First, some of them are too carefree. Nowadays, some young people are not serious enough with their jobs. It would produce an extra cost to the company if they could not finish the job before the deadline. For example, the company may lose some customers. Second, some youths nowadays are too proud. They have good qualifications and they may not be willing to listen to the senior colleagues in the company. It would adversely affect the work qualities and team spirit of the company.
In order to be a good employer, Mr. Wong pointed out some qualities for young job seekers. First of all, young people should be humble at workplace. it is because job seekers always have to learn the rules and cultures in a new workplace. If they could not be humble, they could suffer even more than they could think. Second, they should be punctual. If they could be on time, they could finish the job earlier.
In the end, Mr. Wong blessed all our schoolmates to be success in HKDSE and he also hoped that young people should pursue their own career path.
