Back to the path you want
One day, my roommate, David said he would leave the next day. I was puzzled, ‘Why do you leave so suddenly? He kept silent. It seemed he didn’t want to say anything.
That night, I bought some whisky from the supermarket. Then, I invited David to drink them with me. After he was drunk, he finally dared to tell me something.
‘Law? Become a lawyer? I don’t want that. It is disgusting!’ he murmured.
‘What has happened?’ I continued, ‘You would like to become a lawyer, right?’ ‘No! I love art. Not the trash law!’ He shouted very angrily.
I made him calm down.
Then, he whispered, ‘Long ago, I love drawing. My teacher and classmates always said my drawing was beautiful and cool.’
‘You must be very happy then, mustn’t you?’ I asked. ‘Yes, of course,’ he replied with pride.
He suddenly cried, ‘But my family said it is useless, so they turned on a lighter. Then my lovely paintings… all burnt,’ he said in despair. ‘They made me study and do those boring exercises and exercises! I was not allowed to pick up my painting brush any more. I could only listen to them. Studying days and nights like a robot.’ I shook my head and felt pity for him.
‘Now you can choose your own path if you can be braver.’ I said. ‘Yes, I am independent from them now. I can do what I like.’ ‘If you like to be an artist, you can try. I’ll stand by you.’ He thanked me and he looked better.
On the next day, David left before I woke up. I looked at his desk. There was nothing. I sent him an email, ‘Goodbye! I wish you all the best. Your dream will come true one day.’ David is a brave person. He dares to stand up for himself and be independent from his parents.
‘I hope you would have a good life, David.’
