You are working for the SPCA as a part-time volunteer. Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a speech to deliver to animal lovers. In your speech, you should explain to your audience why they should adopt a pet from the SPCA instead of buying one from pet shops if they want to keep a pet.
Hello, Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to this gathering and your presence means you are an animal lover. Animals are cute and a lot of people would love to have one as their companion. Speaking of getting a pet, people’s first thought would be pet shops. Buying animals from shops is common in Hong Kong. However, is ‘buying’ the option when comes to getting a pet for your family? Do you know there’s actually a more beneficial option? That is, adopting a pet from us, the SPCA. You wouldn’t believe, but adopting a pet actually does more benefits than buying. Are you not convinced? Then, let me tell you all about the advantages of adopting instead of buying a pet.
First, you can help the homeless animals by giving them a home. All the animals in the SPCA are longing for a home and a loving owner. These animals are not different from those you see in the pet shops. They are just as cute and playful as those in the pet shops. They are wanting to show you how much they love you. Second, the animals you buy might not be healthy. Some of you might not know, but the kitten or puppies you see behind the glass come from breeding farms. And trust me, the breeding farms are not as rare as you think. Those breeders would put the adult animals in a small cage, with stale food and dirty water. Females are often forced to go in heat and breed several litters per year, while normal females usually only have two litters. Once the younglings are old enough, they would be taken away from their mother and put into a crowded cage, waiting for the pet shops’ owners to collect them. The poor mother would be forced to breed again and a new cycle begins. The animals in these farms are often mistreated and sick. Many of the animals in the SPCA were rescued from those farms as well. You might want to reconsider before taking a pet from the shop.
In conclusion, adopting would benefit both humans and animals. The animals could get a home, where they are loved and cared for and you could get a healthier pet from the SPCA. All the furry friends from the SPCA are well-treated and well-trained. You can help break the cycle of the breeding farm by adopting a pet. This way, fewer animals would be abandoned or suffered from pain. Thank you for being such an attentive audience. I hope you can act accordingly after listening to my sharing.
