What Qualities Are Important When Seeking A Job?
In no time, senior form students are going to face their one-off public examination – Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). After the examination, they have to start a new page of life. Some of them may further study in the tertiary education and some may join the workforce. To let students well equip and prepare themselves in the ever-changing society, our school Career Counselling Committee invited Mr Wong, an experienced social worker to have a talk on what qualities potential employers are looking for in the applicants.
First of all, Mr Wong started his talk by playing an interactive game with our schoolmates. He asked them a few questions including what qualities employers would consider important in applicants. After asking the questions, majority of our schoolmates replied that academic excellence in public examinations should be of the utmost importance. To our surprise, Mr Wong told us that academic excellence in public examinations was not the only quality which helped in job seeking but also the personalities and attitudes of the candidates.
Mr Wong kept on explaining to us what employers did not like about employees such as poor communication skills, incapable of handling things independently and coping new challenges and stress. It is not uncommon to find that a lot of fresh graduates might not have good social skills and cannot get along well with their clients or colleagues. Also, they do not know how to organize the things logically and fail to complete their assigned tasks independently. So, having good working attitudes and effective communication skills can help candidate to stand out from the interview.
Schoolmates were inspired by what Mr Wong said and they displayed active participation in the seminar. At the end of the seminar, all of us gave Mr Wong a big applause as we deeply felt we had benefited a lot from the seminar.
