An invitation letter to students
Dear fellow schoolmates,
I am writing on behalf of the Student Union to invite you to join the Green Monday Campaign. Would you like to eat less meat? Would you like to start eating more fresh food? The activities will be held every Monday in December. It will help you have a fresh and healthy December.
Tuck shops are synonymous with sweets, crisps and soft drinks. Some popular snacks in our school tuck shop are instant noodles, potato crisps, sweets and soft drinks. This type of is unhealthy. Do you like to eat food that is harmful to your health? If not, I encourage you to eat more vegetables and fruits in your diet. You could choose vegetarian lunch-boxes. Don`t worry! The tuck shop will provide a series of vegetarian delicacies every Monday. This is your healthy alternative.
Let’s look at the three main reasons for holding this campaign. First, it is good for the environment. Agriculture is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. It is an even bigger contributor than fume emission from all vehicles. Rearing livestock for animal-based products requires far more land, water and energy than producing grains. There are 27kg CO2 generated per kilo of beef in comparison to 0.9kg per kilo of lentils. According to a 2016 Oxford study, the adoption of a vegan diet globally would cut food-related emissions by 70%.That`s got to be a good reason to put down the ham sandwich and reduce meat in your diet. Secondly, we should not have unhealthy diets with too much meat! Since Hong Kong is a relatively wealthy and developed city, people have more meat meals in our daily life.
However eating too much meat may cause or increase the risk of major diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. Besides, eating too much meat may cause obesity because too much fat will be accumulated inside our bodies. Eating vegetarian food can help you lose weight and it might make you live longer! A 2015 study showed that those following a vegan diet lost comparatively more weight than those following omnivorous and vegetarian ones. Also, numerous scientific studies have been taken to measure the impact of a plant-based diet in reducing the risk of diseases mentioned above, with positive results. A vegan diet also eases the symptoms of arthritis-suffers and can help to prevent obesity.Last but not least, eating vegetables is a good way for you to start a new week at school or at work. It can help welcome a change of pace in the mind and body. Vegetarian food is full of essential vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. All of these should keep you feeling and looking sharp. You will be full of energy to face the new challenges of the week.Furthermore, the aim of Green Mondays is to raise the awareness of the benefits of eating vegetarian food, protecting our environment and living a healthy lifestyle.
Joining Green Monday is not compulsory but we believe that spreading the message of eating vegetarian food and promoting the Green Mondays campaign can improve our school lives. It can also help protect our environment for future generations to enjoy.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
