Dear editor,
Nowadays, many students believe that public examinations make them too stressed. Therefore, I am writing to express my opinion on the Hong Kong public examination and explain whether it is stressful or not.
As a senior-form student, the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Examination is definitely crucial to me. In Hong Kong, good qualifications are definitely an advantage for students to pursuit their ideal career. It is believed that employers prefer applicants with excellent results in public exams. The job applicants who do not have excellent public exam results may not be shortlisted. Hence, the public exam results seem to be an determinant to students’ career path or future. Getting good public exam results seems to be a cornerstone of success.
Moreover, attaining excellent public exam results enhances the chance of getting into university and pursuit ideal careers. It is no doubt that studying a professional subject and being a professional in the future is a dream for every student in Hong Kong. Then, it leads to a question: Who can get into university? The answer is very simple – students with remarkable exam results. It is not difficult to find that most of the professional subjects, such as law, engineering and medicine, are available to students who excel in public exams.
Therefore, the public exam makes me definitely stressed. In order to equip myself well for the examination, it is necessary for me to study an unmeasurable amount of subject knowledge on one hand. On the other hand, I have to get familiar with the ever-changing examination system. These two tasks occupy all my time. Taking part in leisure activities is quite “costly” to me. Once I spend some time on entertainment, I may lose some time to do revision and I may get a bigger risk of getting lower grades in the public exam.
All in all, it is no doubt that the public exam in Hong Kong is one of the important criteria to decide student’s future. Due to its keen competition, it makes students in Hong Kong too stressed.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
