Vital Qualities for Successful Career
With the right cards, a right career is obtainable. Mr. Wong, a social worker carved this message into the hearts of the students of Schooly School in a seminar run by the school’s counseling committee, which was held on 2nd December 2017. The seminar shed light on the important qualities employers are looking for among applicants.
Mr. Wong said that academic performance was possibly one of the most important trump cards for fresh graduates to get a career of their desire. He explained to the students that employers had little to none knowledge about their personalities, thus the only thing employers would judge students on is their academic performance. The logic behind this is that fresh graduates can deceive their employers about their attitudes and personalities during job interviews, thus their real personality traits are more likely to be hidden to their potential employers and the latter know this well. That is why employers place a lot more values on academic performance than what people perceive. Since academic performance can show a certain amount of intelligence and personality traits such as dedication and determination of a person. Moreover, academic performances are statistics on paper and cannot be lied, thus employers view academic performance as a much more reliable method to judge their applicants.
“Teenagers are ready for society yet,” stated Mr. Wong. Teenagers are not used to society and workplace and they haven’t developed a workplace mentality yet. Most of the teenagers start from the bottom and work their way up. The problem is that starting all over again may be difficult for some teenagers to swallow due to the pride they’ve built up in school. “They will have a hard time getting used to be bossed around by their co-workers,” said Mr. Wrong. This is especially true since most teenagers have little idea of what they should do in the workplace.
Mr. Wong believes that with the qualities employers desire, the chance of an applicant being employed would dramatically increase. Obedience is a trait that employers desire because it makes employers much easier to manage for them, boosting productivity of the company as a whole. Reliability is another obvious quality that employers desire; chances will always be given to the reliable. Finally, the most important characteristic employers want in their applicants is loyalty. Employers want employees who work for and love the company from the bottom of their hearts. “Surely, no employers want to employ a sellout!”
Students who attended that seminar said they loved it very much and they found it very useful.
