Also, Andrew Clemente will be acting as our 2020 WHSMB Student Producer in charge of PR/social media and equipment management. Students leaders will have their first meeting next Thursday, June 11, at 6 PM--please watch out for an email with a Google Meet link.
A few other important announcements/reminders:
Unfortunately, the 4th of July Parade has been cancelled this year. We are still waiting to find out the status of the rest of the summer/fall season.
If you need to return any items you borrowed from the music room or get your instrument or other personal belongings that were left in the music room, you will be able to do this next week when you go in to school to clean out your locker. You can indicate this in the comment area when you complete the Signup Genius for Mr. Senor and/or contact Mrs. Nowmos so she can pass on the info. We recommend that whatever instrument you will be using for marching band, please get it now so you will have it for the summer, as we have limited access to the building over the summer anyway. Jazz band students, Mr. Massaro has also asked that you please return your books and ties to the music room.
We are beginning to recruit some new members for the band, but it's even more difficult than usual under the current situation. Please reach out to your classmates, friends, and even younger siblings of friends who will be in 8th grade and up in the fall (including not just WMS/WHS but also Alloway, Upper Pittsgrove, and Oldmans Twp. students) and tell them how great it is to be part of the band. Share the membership video with them and ask them to fill out the band contact form so we can put them on the email list and make sure they get all the info they need to join.
And speaking of the contact form 🙃 some of you who we know are definitely returning for the 2020 season haven't filled it out yet. Please take a couple minutes to do so right now if you haven't already--we appreciate it!
Another reminder that the show music has been uploaded to the WHSMB 2020 - Members folder - check it out! If you want to get starting on something specific, work on m. 11-31 of "Reflections of Earth" and please also listen to the recording. We will also have some additional show intro parts for Front Ensemble added to the drive shortly.
Thanks, and have a great first week of June!
June 2020 Update #2 - 6/12/2020
We're winding down towards the end of school, but marching band is just getting started!
Since we're still unable to meet in person, we're going to officially kick off the 2020 season with our first WHSMB 2020 Google Meet! This online meeting will be on Thurs., June 25, at 6 PM. All members of the band and especially new members are encouraged to attend. If you have friends who are interested in finding out more about band, please tell them about the meeting and invite them! The link to join the meeting is http://meet.google.com/kif-hjqz-sug. Mrs. Nowmos will send out a reminder email/message about this when we get closer to the meeting.
New members, please join our Marching Band class on Remind if you haven't already done so. Text @whsmb19 to 81010 or use the same code to join the class in the Remind app to make sure you don't miss any important announcements! Parents are welcome to join the class, too.
Follow the WHSMB on Instagram and encourage your friends (including those not in band... it might help get them interested in band, hint, hint) to follow too! Our student leaders frequently post photos and info about band events. The band's Instagram handle is @whsmarchingband_.
Please continue to reach out to your friends and classmates to get them interested in joining the band. We need new members in all sections, but especially high brass (trumpet/mellophone--it's ok if it's been a while since they've played or even if they are new) and color guard (this would be ideal for friends who are dancers or in drama club! No color guard experience is necessary!) Share the membership video with them and ask them to fill out the band contact form so we can put them on the email list and make sure they get all the info they need to join.
Another reminder that the show music has been uploaded to the WHSMB 2020 - Members folder. Please take a look at the music for "Mars" and listen to the recording. New parts for the Sagan show intro for Front Ensemble have also been uploaded to your music folder.
Here is our WHSMB 2020 Handbook - please read through it, especially page 3, which includes a list of essential items you will need for the band season. We will go over the handbook at our kickoff meeting in a couple weeks.
Please note that, while the rehearsal/performance calendar has not been approved yet, we want to give you a heads up that rehearsals this year will be on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (this is a change from previous years), 6-9 PM. We'll send out the calendar once dates have been confirmed with administration.
Thanks, and looking forward to seeing everyone virtually soon!
June 2020 Update #3 - 6/23/2020
Can't wait for our first full band student meeting!
Our first WHSMB 2020 Google Meet will be held online on Thurs., June 25, at 6 PM. All members of the band and especially new members are encouraged to attend. If you have friends who are interested in finding out more about band, please tell them about the meeting and invite them! The link to join the meeting is http://meet.google.com/kif-hjqz-sug. Parents are welcome to hop on, too, although we are planning a meeting specifically for parents soon. Here is an agenda for the meeting if you want to look it over ahead of time.
Please make sure that you are doing some kind of physical activity to stay fit and build up endurance while at home to prepare for the physical rigors of being in marching band. Anything can help: yoga/stretching, cardio (walking/running/cycling/swimming/dance), strength training, calisthenics (jumping jacks, crunches, pushups, squats, Burpees, etc.), etc. MarchingHealth.com also offers a free "Back to Band" training program specifically for marching band (you have to create a login, but there is no cost to sign up).
We will be incorporating listening and practice assignments throughout the summer and the season for inspiration and to help develop skills. Your first assignment is to watch Santa Clara Vanguard's 2012 show, Music of the Starry Night. This show incorporates music from Holst's The Planets, which we will be playing for our show this year (completely different arrangement, obviously). If you've never watched a drum corps show, prepare to be amazed! DCI (Drum Corps International) is the marching arts taken to their highest level, and SCV is one of the top corps in the country.
This link will also be posted in the marching band Google Classroom after Thursday's meeting, if anyone would like to discuss their impressions of what they saw/heard. If you are not a member of our GC, the code to join is 566wxqd. (Unfortunately only WMS and WHS are able to join the GC--more info to come about this during the meeting on Thursday).
New members, another reminder to please join our Marching Band class on Remind if you haven't already done so. Text @whsmb19 to 81010 or use the same code to join the class in the Remind app to make sure you don't miss any important announcements! Parents are welcome to join the class, too.
Another reminder that the show music has been uploaded to the WHSMB 2020 - Members folder. Please continue to work on the music for "Mars" (we will announce cuts in the music soon). If you have questions about which part you should play, please contact one of the staff members to clarify.
Thanks, and looking forward to seeing everyone virtually soon!
