SAGAN: From the Intimate to the Infinite pays tribute to the life and work of renowned astronomer, astrobiologist, science writer, and educator Dr. Carl Sagan (1934-1996), whose research played a key role in the development of the space program and NASA missions to Mars, Venus, and Jupiter. Sagan dedicated his life to improving public understanding of science. His writings and television series COSMOS helped generate a deeper interest in astronomy and exploring the mysteries of the universe.
The overarching theme of our 2020 show is humankind's passion for knowledge and exploration, beginning within ourselves and moving outward to our planet and the entire universe. In the words of Dr. Sagan: “As long as there have been humans, we have searched for our place in the Cosmos. In the childhood of our species… and in our own age, we have been transfixed by this question: Where are we? Who are we?....Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.”
The show will feature music from The Planets, an orchestral suite composed between 1914 and 1916 by British composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934). It will also include original music composed for the band by assistant director Christine Nowmos.
