Assignment 9.1: Succeeding in Postsecondary
Education/Training and Employment
Purpose: Accommodations can lead to success in postsecondary education/training and future employment, but they will not work alone. Students need to know what they need, how to share that and follow through.
Instructions: Students can learn from other students with disabilities who have transitioned successfully to postsecondary education/training and employment. In this assignment listen to these stories. Use what you have learned about self-advocacy and ADA and the guiding questions for a small group or class discussion. Follow up with writing a summary of the videos you watch.
Part A:
Watch this video of Jonothan Mooney sharing his “Lessons Learned” on self-advocacy and accommodations. http://www.pacer.org/transition/video/player.asp?video=13
After watching the video use these guiding questions for a small group or class discussion:
What is one word to describe Jonathan?
What are some of the accommodations he used to succeed?
Which lesson did you connect with the most?
Which lesson do you think will help you in your future?
What is something new you heard or learned?
Part B:
Work with your case manager/teacher to choose 2 of the videos below to watch. Another option would be to watch the Self-Determination Channel and choose a video from there.
Video 2: Valeska's Learning Disability
Video 3 Dana’s Learning Disability/ADD
Video 4 Employment First Medford WI
Video 5 Alexis Employment Story
After watching the videos use these guiding questions for a small group discussion and sharing. Then write a summary about the video and share with your case manager.
What examples of self-advocacy did you observe?
What were some accommodations you observed or that the person with a disability shared?
Can you give examples from the video of other people or activities or events that were part of the person with a disability being successful?
What is a question you have for the person in the video?
Write 2 questions about this video for a classmate to answer. Share and discuss.
