Assignment 10.3: Script for Disclosure
Purpose: Once the decision to disclose is made, students with disabilities need to plan how they will disclose. This is very important because you can use this disclosure to gain trust, emphasize abilities, educate employers and instructors on the disabilities and they will become an advocate in the workplace or the classroom.
Instruction: Develop a script for disclosing your disability that you can use when speaking to an instructor or a prospective employer. The script should explain your disability and emphasize your abilities. Choose 2 people to practice this script with.
Before creating the script---Answer these questions:
Why are you disclosing?
When will you disclose?
What will you disclose?
To whom you will disclose?
How will you disclose?
TIPS for writing your script:
Tell about positive attributes or strengths first.
Identify the limitations or challenges you may face in the course or at work because of your disability.
Identify which accommodations that have worked best for you in the past and why.
End the script with positive points such as how you expect you will succeed in the course/job with the necessary support.
