Student Reflections and Considerations

The I’m Determined Project, a state-directed project funded by the Virginia Department of Education, focuses on providing direct instruction, models, and opportunities to practice skills associated with self-determined behavior. This project facilitates youth, especially those with disabilities, to undertake a measure of control in their lives. This helps to set and steer their course rather than remain a silent passenger.  They created two resources that are valuable for students to take and reflect on.  The I'm Determined Reflection gives some questions for students to consider, starting at age 10 and goes through each age to age 21.  They also have a student rubric that is a good starting place for students to reflect on their own IEP participation, which helps to discover self-advocacy needs as well as the level of participation in one's own IEP meeting.
